Hi Guys,

So last week upon switching on my engine I received the message, I immediately checked coolant, full, checked all hoses etc and couldn't see any issue.

Drove around for a bit and no sign of overheating so suspected it may be sensor, checked, no issue there.

I took to my indie but he doesn't have the STAR kit so reluctantly booked into MB garage for diagnostics.

In the mean time yesterday i got caught in traffic and saw engine rise to 3 figure temps, appears my radiator fan is not spinning at all. Quickly got the car home away from traffic and banked it.

So, does this warning and the fact radiator fan not turning sound like the issue to you? If so should I swap it out and cancel the diagnostics for now in the hope that fixes the issue?

My Indie said he will take a look tomorrow and probe the fan to see if it is dead, anything to worry about here?

I understand the fan and fan controller are the same part, does anyone know the part number required for a W209 2005 220 CDI.

Many thanks guys.

Check all fuses first. Sounds like engine fan control unit (or rarely motor itself) is faulty like suspected.

Edit: Could be temp sensor too, with star control unit can be tested and read the sensor data

Good point, will take a look at fuse first. Any idea which one (not the most mechanically minded person).

if the fuse is ok check the plug connected to the fan as well for corrosion etc etc:)

Many many thanks, Fuse looks ok, just gotta find a diagram to find out where the plug is, tight in there and loads of bits plugging into other bits etc..

I've had it confirmed that the cooling fan is gone, and the controller / fan are sold as one piece but struggling to find a part number.

Any ideas?

I'm sure there are stamped numbers on your current parts, check them. Russian EPC give A2035000503 for the whole radiator package (shroud+motor)

Many thanks, sorry, should have said car is currently at the indie, just wanted the number really to see if I can source a replacement new /sh and see how the price compares with whatever I'm quoted (to be safe).

Appears that number is the radiator as opposed to the fan / ecu. Don't worry, I doubt MB parts vary that much when bought direct. I'll just have to swallow it.

There's a whole shopping list of other things needing attention anyway and so money has now become a comical rising number I see on a credit card bill as opposed to something I care about.

Appreciate your effort.

Believe me when I say the price of an engine fan will fade into significance compared to the potential consequences of an overheated engine. Hopefully they won't need to interfere/regas with the aircon condenser as part of the job as there is evidently a bit of a shortage of aircon gas at the moment?

That I can believe.

Luckily I am a bit OCD with guages and so constantly watch anyway and so way quick to notice it getting into that 3 figure territory.

I'm just glad I can bypass having to go the stealers and pay them £200 to hook me up to a computer, to tell me something I already know.

For completeness and for anybody else who comes across this issue.

Part is costing me £320 + vat + labour - OEM

Ouch... On my W203 it cost me £90 from the breakers and fifteen minutes of my own time to swap the entire fan assy over. 1 plug and a couple of pull up plastic retaining clips and bobs your aunty.

I have been absence for a long time, pardon me for being late to post this message. I had the same problem a month ago, my temperature gauge rose to over 3 digits in a traffic jam. It was later confirmed that my auxiliary radiators were dead. I removed the fans and found that the carbon brushes were stuck, After I have freed them manually, the fans were back to life. I save the repair and replacement cost. For those who have similar problem may like to try this first.

W203: Radiator fan on full bore

Interested as I have the same problem - March 2015

Has anyone checked out the electrics to the Fan module plug.

Looks like the supply is via the larger Red and Brown cables, and the control is via the smaller green wire (also a smaller black wire).

So we can assume the Red and Brown are OK.

What voltage is expected on the control wire(s) for off and full on.

If this is established, we can confirm the FAN control module is faulty or a relay stuck on - whatever?

Can anyone help?

I would like to thank the OP for providing some useful info.

I have a CLK 320 M112 and in slow moving traffic the temp needle starts to touch the 100C mark. Similar issue to the OP I guess.

I don't know if, when sitting inside the cabin, how to tell if the fan is on. Obviously I can't pop out the car and listen, in slow moving traffic :)

Normally the needle hovers between 80C-90C when no or slight traffic. Also, at what temp should the fan switch on in this engine?

Thanks
