Yesterday my E320CDI wouldn't start after coming out of the bodyshop where it had been for a couple of weeks for a new set of front wings and other stuff under the corrosion warranty.
MobiloLife came out re-charged the battery, cleared the faults, and all seemed well. Drove away, and used the car for most of the day. Garaged overnight wouldn't start again this morning - this isn't the first time I've been round this loop - last time was new EIS (OUCH) and eventually new battery after a long and expensive stay at the stealer-ship.
Called out MobiloLife again. The same guy who came out yesterday attended - he hadn't got many calls on and said he wasn't going to give up on this one ...
Symptoms:
Turn on ignition - turn to crank position - nothing happens, turn off ignition, and all stays on even after removing key (for quite a while).
Disconnect Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) while in this state and it still stays on.
STAR has no useful suggestions apart from reporting ALL glow plugs down and, or glow control unit open which doesn't explain why engine won't turn over. Also all sorts of wierd fault codes all over the place.
Disconnect starter solenoid wire at ECU, and now ignition will turn off with key, but of course it really won't start in this state.
FOUR HOURS later - many false trails followed with 'phone calls to various colleagues, we ended up with suspicion pointing to the starter motor. Before deciding to recover the car to the local dealers however, he decided to try one last thing!
He used a jump lead to make an earth connection from the engine to the chassis. The engine springs to life to a round of cheers. The smoking gun has been found at last.
All that remained was to disconnect the earth strap from the gearbox to the chassis clean up the corrosion and reconnect it. All fixed (apart from clearing all the fault codes)!!!
All praise to the MobiloLife guy (local to Coventry - a good friend of Craig's) who solved this - well above and beyond the call of duty.
I'm extremely grateful that he hadn't got a backlog of other calls, and highly impressed with his knowledge and persistence - this guy just wouldn't let a tricky problem beat him.
