W210 Evaporator Woe.

Hi,
I investigated doing this on my C43 (it turned out that it was,nt the evap) what put me off was the removal of the entire steering column (inside the car) and the entire heater box, though I believe the book time just for removing/replacing the evaporator is 9hrs. Give Olly a call as he gave the most competitive price I found to do it, and you could feel 100% sure that it would be done correctly.
I did find a "HOW TO" on an American forum on changing the Evap on a 210, but cannot seem to find it now.
Can the A/C hose connection's to the Evap be accessed on a 210? As you could try replacing the seals on them or just nipping them up could solve the problem, as there is a lot said about A/C pipe seals leaking.
Best of luck on whatever you decide.

Many Thanks Andy.

The how to is here as posted by w124coupe earlier.

It's a shame I'm not nearer to Olly, from what I have read and heard I could trust him with anything. ;)

I have used the car this week and when the aircon is first turned on it does blow quite cold. However, the longer the aircon is on the less cold it becomes.

Does anyone know if this is symptomatic with the evaporator being faulty or could it (hopefully) be another (less expensive ) fault.

Car has had a new radiator and condensor and has just been re-gassed.

TIA.

Thanks Lynall.

Jigsaw puzzles were never a favourite of mine though, and that looks so daunting.

I don't fancy paying £1000.00 for the repair either though.

Regards,

Paul.

Tempting....

I think Olly would need the car for more than a day though.

I know he's good because I've seen a picture of him at work and he uses wing protectors.

I stayed overnight at a local b&b for £35.
Why not phone him and discuss what he can do for you?

This has got to be worth a try.

It was a bodyshop that diagnosed the evaporator fault and although I'm sure they know their stuff, given the cost of replacing the part, I think I'll go down the routes suggested by you and w124coupe.

Many Thanks Guys.

Maybe worth getting an a/c man to look at it? e bay r134a top up or sealer, i know not perfect but surely worth a try?.

I have used the top up cans (not leak sealer) on a td5 disco, ml320 and wifes old mini cooper as they were cold but not quite right, it made an appreciable difference on all of them so was well chuffed iirc £12 a can, this was before i has access to an a/c machine.

Have you checked all your fuses? its worth it as i once got charged for a/c diagnosis, only to be told fuse was blown for a/c cooling fan! im not going to tell you how much that fuse cost me:o.

Thanks Mate.

I may take it to a local indie I know that does aircon and ask for a fresh opinion without revealing the original diagnosis so as not to sway them one way or the other.

Took the car to a local indie and they tested it.

They reckon there is a "huge hole" in the system and have quoted £600 labour (dash out) and £300ish for the evaporator.

Having heard of "group buys" on the forum, does anyone fancy a "group dismantle" at a GTG say? :D
