Hi,

My brothers P-Reg e230 has developed an odd problem. It seems to be hessitant when moving off from stationary or low speeds i.e. Revs when you put your foot down but the car jerks along until it eventually gathers some speed.

The car had diags run at the weekend but nothing showed up so the plugs were cleaned. The Mechanic suggested that the plug cups may need changing.

Your thoughts please before the work gets done.

Cheers.

I suspect faulty coil giving low output voltage.

Not sure if this car uses a distributor or multi coils. If it's distributor check the cap and rotor arm, but it still sounds like low output.

You can buy a really cheap flash tester to check the output Here..

I used to have one until someone decided they needed it more than me, but as I don't have any sparky bits now it doesn't matter...

Hi,
where would i find the coils? i think the mechanic discounted them as no error was shown on the diags.
basically what is happening is the revs shoot up when moving off resulting in jerking movements before the car settles.
The mechanic recommended changing the plug cups, do u think that is is the cause or will solve the problem?

cheers

Hi. Got a set of plug cups for my bro's car today, 2 small (with plastic ends) and 2 large.

I swapped the large ones, and i think it has made a difference - less stuttering, but hasn't gone altogether. The old ones looked a little corroded inside. Question is how do you change the cups with the plastic extension type pieces? I can't see how you take the ignition lead out the old one or how it would fit the new one. Am i missing something here?

Please help....

I take it you are talking about the caps on the end of the ignition leads? Just buy new leads as the caps are usually molded on.

ok. the caps i got from euro cp didn't have the leads moulded. i'll drop by benz this week to get the right parts.

the problem is still there, worse than ever. the two smaller coils haven't been changed, but i'm thinking that the problem is not with them. any ideas anyone???

i have a multimeter. what sort of output should i be looking for? voltage, current and value?
also, to measure output, do i need to litterallly stick one end of the meter into the end of the coil, the turn the engine over and repeat for each coil?

cheers

Only if you want to fry the meter big time. You will be looking at about 40kV from the coils. You wont be able to measure the voltage with a meter anyway as it is instantainous not sine wave.

I posted a link to a cheap spark flash tester, they are only a couple of pounds, just buy one.

ok. Latest is that my bro has bought the coils from benz and the leads and other bits.
the lead is just a length of cable that apparently you need to cut anf it yourself.
much appreciated if anyone has got any tips on how to do this before i give it a go on the weekend?

changed all the leads and plugs this evening, and the problem was still there. bro checked the gearbox oil level and it was low...this was topped up and the high revs/little or no power issue seemed to calm down a bit...what is going on? possible gear box issue?

sounds like a air mass sensor problem to me

hello MBTECH, how are you mate?

is there anyway to be certain? would just unplugging help?

the car was just revving to high heaven and just not really moving much, like the wheels had been disconnected!

unplugged the MAS and no difference, so guess its not this...back to drawing board

From your description I can't really understand what is happening with the car.
When pulling away does the engine speed rise in fits and jerks and spitting sounds or does the engine speed rise smothly but the car speed only rise slowly and in jerky movements.

If it's the first then it's engine related and if the second then probably gearbox or more likely torque converter.

Hi,

Basically what happens is the engine would rev high, normally i guess because you have to put your foot down further to get it to move, then the car would jerk around a bit until finally all those revs end up at the wheels...it wll be going to indy today/tomorrow, so i'll report back what they find
