Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a phone to the Audio 20 CD unit in a W211. The unit has phone buttons but reports 'no phone' when pushed.
Seems odd that Mercedes would have provided this function without any obvious way of enabling it? I know the cars fitted with command can have phones installed using an interface. But what about cars fitted with Audio 20 CD players?

They all have the phone buttons. Only the MY09 W211 with NTG2.5 based Audio 20 / Comand has fully bluetooth connectivity built into the headunit.

For pre MY09 with the older NTG1 based unit you need to have phone pre-wire (UHI) to use the phone function. See UHI section: Choosing Bluetooth Cradle for European Mercedes Vehicles

Thanks, seems an expensive option though (£500+) for the kit. I guess it would be cheaper to buy an eBay command 2.5 unit then I'll have Bluetooth available for the phone.

If you have UHI then you just need the cradle or bluetooth adapter. Comand Online Ltd :: Mercedes Phone/Bluetooth

If you dont you can install Fiscon Pro or mCar which will give you bluetooth connectivity and work as the factory phone kit does. You wont need a cradle or bluetooth adapter for them. Comand Online Ltd :: Mercedes Phone/Bluetooth :: Phone System Retrofit Kits

Or you can install the newer NTG2.5 based Audio 20 fitted to MY09 W211. It has full bluetooth connectivity built in.
