W211 Auxiliary Port - What’s it all about?

I, being stupid, thought that if I enabled the old Bluetooth phone thing in the centre console to connect to my phone, it would let me play music from my phone.
It doesn't.
The phone feature works so having limited fun with the linguatronic.
Hey ho. I sometimes forget the car is 17 years old 🤦😁
Bluetooth telephony is a different protocol to music streaming 👍

Plug one of these in

Get one of the Bluetooth adapters if you have the auxiliary port. They are very cheap and work brilliantly

:( Unfortunately my W211 doesn't have an auxiliary port in the glove box. That would have been useful.
It might not but Many MB's are pre wired for it , for example 2006 W203 c class (depending on which head unit is fitted) has the plug already in the loom and a punch out indent in the glove box to accept the rest of the loom , which is a genuine part supplied by MB = instant factory 3.5mm input.

On the aforementioned C class its easy to find underneath the plastic trim in the passenger side door sill.

The trick is doing the research to see if your car has such a plug buried in the wiring.

Does the glove box have a part of it that looks like a pop out blanking that is part of the original moulding ? it's quite easy to spot if it does.

Hi - Yes you can see that the place is in the glovebox BUT the hole to put a 3.5 jack is not there. Instead it is covered.

Yes , it's a 'pop out' they molded them in all of the gloveboxes at some point those cars that were due a 3.5mm jack simply had the 'blank' popped out if the car in question was going to be fitted with a plug. Just like older cars have tons of plugs and wiring in them that was intended for the more luxurious cars in the same range and simply sits redundant in the poverty spec model.

Not see so much in new cars made these days.

When CANBUS took over in vehicle "wiring" the need for most of the cabling was significantly reduced as more control units were introduced to receive and act on the signals transmitted 👍

As above. Nothing special, just a 3.5mm jack plug.

You can plug a Bluetooth receiver into it and stream music from other devices but
Oh, good idea! That would be easier than trying to run a cable from phone to port.

Well, I’ve got a Bluetooth thingy arriving shortly and I intend to connect it to my iPhone which is loaded with tunes! I will let you know how it goes, because until yesterday I didn’t know such a thing existed!
I owned a 211 with one of them for five years. Never discovered it. Sold it to a member here who had music playing through it immediately.

Doh.......

Oh no. I don’t know the solution to that other than a replacement head unit that does Apple CarPlay etc

Aaaaaw man! That properly sucks! I don’t know about tech, but I saw it had the aux option. Asked on here for some advice and a few days later I had music streaming crystal clear from my iPhone.

What an idiot LOL.

I did figure it out in my 212 as it had the full MMI connectivity so I could plug all sorts of things in and/or use a memory card and/or fill up the music register.

I've since gone the whole hog and bought an Integrated Automotive unit that gives me apps in the dash; Spotify, Pocket Casts, Audible, Google Maps etc.

Any recommendations for a bt unit? I’ve just got a long cable from the glove to my iphone with a 3.5mm jack to lightning adapter.
I’ve got the HK uograded system and I love the sound and loudness - I don’t want to lose too much of the quality.

I ended up buying this 2-in-1 Wireless Bluetooth 5.0 Transmitter Receiver Adapter Audio 3.5mm Jack Aux | eBay
The reason was the jack isn’t part of the unit. Instead it uses a short cable so the whole thing fits neatly in the glove box with no cables going anywhere. I thought it was so cheap that if it was crap I could just chuck it out, but it’s been superb. It connects instantly to my iPhone and the sound quality is excellent. The only drawback, and it really isn’t one, is it periodically needs charging. I’ve had it in my car a week and it doesn’t need charging yet.
