Hi

I bought the car 3 months ago - a 52 plate W211, with 65k on the clock. I needed a diesel car due to mileage (1,000ish a week).

I noticed that every now and then there is a "generator" type noise coming from the engine compartment. It makes this noise if the car is parked up and I unlock it. Pumping the brake peddle a few times also makes this noise occur so assume it related to a servo of some kind.

Recently I notice that under light braking the steering wheel pulls slightly to the right, releasing the brake peddle causes the wheel to move (back) to the left.

I spoke to my local MB Dealer who said "They all do that sir", however I disagree.

Any ideas or am I being silly ?

Many thanks
Steven

My guess...

1. Noise: this is the fuel pump priming the injection system?
2. 'They all do that sir' is a stanard MB stealer response to most of the problems I have found with my 2003 C-Class. 2 or 3 repeat visits to get anyhthing done is quite common in my experience.
3. Pulling whilst braking: most certainly worn/scored discs or pads. Take your car to a independant to sort out, else MB stealer will charge about £400 per wheel + VAT (happened to me...but argued to claim under warranty).

Good luck!

Hi - the noise is the SBC system coming up to pressure...you'll find that it happens when you're driving along as well, but you probably don't notice it.

For once, the dealer is right with "they all do that, Sir".....

Noise is probably the SBC system (perfectly normal if it is)

I am NEVER happy about a vehicle that pulls to one side when braking.

Regards,
John

SBC pump noise is always there. However the noise level on mine has reduced greatly since Dealer slightly moved one of the pipes that was making contact with body. Now a muffled "Brrrrr" type noise as opposed to a pronounced "Grrrrrrrrrr" if that makes sense. There is a damper kit but it was not needed on mine.

I would not get too stressed about a slight pull on gentle braking as long as there is nothing evident under moderate or hard braking.

Its not normal for cars to veer to the left when braking. The stealer does not know what he's talking about. Get the brakes and discs checked. Also check the front tyres for uneven wear, as this can also have an affect.

Thanks all for your replies.

I won't worry about it for a bit, but will sort it out after my hols in a weeks or two's time.

I have noticed the SBC noise when driving but not really worried about it. Now I know what it is I'll just try and ignore it !

Thanks again.
Steven
