Hey guys

Noticed past few days strong smell of diesel on start up. Car is 2003 e320cdi.
After couple minutes on idle smell disappears.
Fuel filter changed about 1k. What can it be?

Thanks

Hi Mr Bakili :D

I suppose you should remove the engine cover and look down at the base of each injector..
Do this with the engine running. Look and listen.
It should be bone dry at the base of each injector.. Is it wet and or sooty?
Does it make a sort of chuff chuff chuff sound on tickover?

If the answer is no to the previous points then you haven't got early onset Black death !

If the answer is yes to any of the above then its likely you will need to have the injector resealed with a new copper washer and you will need 2 new stretch bolts for each injector that's affected. (Bolts can only be used once..
Don't leave it.. Get it done sooner rather than later and then its a simple job..
If you let Black death manifest itself fully then it will cost loads in Labour just to clean the engine etc etc..

Obviously check all fuel pipes and fuel filter fittings to see if there is any seepage.

I had engine cover removed couple weeks ago, and injectors are bone dry, can see any sign of black death. I check again. Smell definitely comes from exhaust.

Can't explain hy from the exhaust as you perceive. Suggest look at the HP pump; they're very fond of leaking after a bit. If it is this MB will say 'non service item' - have a new pump at a king's ransom. You can renew the seals for coppers (relatively speaking).

I have had same problem.

Only takes a very small amount of the Devils Own Fuel to stink appallingly.

In my case it was a small amount of seepage around, yes, the fuel filter unions after changing it.

Just had engine cover off again.

All looks bone dry, injectors, fuel filter housing.

It smells diesel for few minutes (stronger smell from back exhaust area) and quite noticeable when stood outside from driver side. No smell inside car. Smell become less after couple minutes on idle.

How about that hp pump? Often when leaking starts, it does it when cold but after warming up the leak stops. Is the pump moist, it drops the diesel ovet the serpentine belt which effectively spreads it over engine bay.

Some have broken fuel filter housing or craked the pipes during the installation, but think you would have found the leak if it would be there...

Can you please point where hp pump located?

I will assume its a V6..
But to be honest the straight 6 is in a similar location anyway...
