hi everyone my brother is looking to buy one, can anyone tell me the difference in the pre update and the update, when the change occurred and what the main differences and running costs are, im not to clued up on my 211s..

thanks a lot for any help..

facelifted late 2005\2006, difference in electrical modules and various harnesses, also physically, lights, grill, bumper, bonnet and wing mirrors.

if your going for a 500 why not go the whole hog and get a ~E55? more options as standard.

my brother just turned 21... insurance are quoting enough as is... i my self would be in a V8 if it wasn't for other issues..

not quite true as some facelifts still have the 306bhp engine, i believe late 06 they started putting in the 388bhp 500 engine in.

However valid point and pritty much bang on :)

I would say go for a facelift as the pre facelift is looking abit old now but if it has an AMG bodykit your sorted :)

All the other updates have been said really, visually, the grille and whole front end changed to have a pointier nose, the rear will have twin exiting exhaust, different steering wheels and of course the sports model was introduced.

Here is a very nice prefacelift, or just get a E320 CDi and remap it, it will have more or less the same perfomance as a 500 and allot cheaper insurance and much better mpg!

LOL @ diesel's
no no V8 Petrol...please

His brother had no choice but to buy a 'benz', otherwise he will disown him for dissin the baj n at:rock: :D:D

my brother is a royal marine.. i dont know what baj n at is.. sounds something a chav would babel...

At 22yr old was paying £1800pa for a BMW X5 4.4i.

I wager insurance will be around £2000.

I can see the lure of the 500. Not for mega miles use but if only did 10k/yr I would have one.

211 issues

Pre facelift

SBC pumps on brakes, its a better system will incredible stopping power but it will need replaced at some point. Often dealer does this FOC

Early cars had a valeo radiator. Be wary of any pre 2005 car as it may have one, although mainly affects 2002-2004. Leaks coolant into box, mega fix as kills box. If looking at an early one, it will need tested for gylcol in the box.

Rust, pre 2004 no galvanisaton, so possible for rust. Unlikely but check.

Post facelift.

7g boxes are crap, I hate mine.
Better looking, more modern and a fair few under the skin improvements.

Issues to all 211's.

Front springs crack
Wheel bearings can go prematurely.

In short, fairly reliable car, a lot to go wrong but it shouldn't. A facelifted car, if your brother can and/or chooses to afford, is a wiser option.

Spec wise.

Go for a sport, a young lad will want all the trim, or at least an AG. Helps a large car shrink.

Spec wise, cannot imagine any E500 being poverty spec. Would say nice things to have is seat heaters, parktronic, leather. Others say COMAND but its a bit crap really and awkward to use in my view, but I am the minority. 6cd stacker nice but ****d really, v8 woofle.

Get the rear windows tinted and get it in silver, they look brilliant. Like mine really, but sparking on 8!!!

I had a pre facelift model in estate form, great cars. It didn't have much of a V8 woofle, but I am sure there are aftermarket options to get round that. It was however really effortless and very comfortable. Nothing went wrong on mine, but the airmatic and the SBC have a habit of costing a lot. Didn't have any problems with the 7g box, which was on mine, I suspect petrol works a lot better than that smelly diesel stuff with it. Decent fuel economy out of town.

Just the sort of car a marine should have. Been trying to persuade a friend who is up in Arbroath to ditch the Honda for a Merc, but he has other priorities at present!

yea my brother is pretty hardcore.. he likes the E because its big and heavy.. i couldent see him in a Diesel... hes looking at 06+ as of now, he also looked at the 350 but it was under hes required 300BHP .. also the e500 is a 5.5 and the quotes are over 2k but there also over 2 k for a 5.0 500... to be honest the update 500s have more power than a lot of AMGs of the same stamp...seems like a great car..

i my self would love a bigger engine car, but i have too much on at the moment plus my insurance is higher because of my earlier mis adventures :thumb::thumb::thumb:

My E320cdi would p155 all over an E350 petrol and give an E500 a good run for the money. Its very smooth and quiet.

Advise him to try one.

The post facelift car, if money allows, is the one to get.

Won't we all, but in reality try driving something really sh*t like a Ford Ka and then drive yours, its all relative, its still a rapid enough car for driving in the UK.

no way he would drive a diesel.. lol he laughed at me when i mentioned a 320cdi.. the E500 300bhp version is nearly or over a 1 sec quicker than a 320cdi the 388bhp 500 is nearly 2 seconds quicker... makes all the difference to him..the diesels also sound "bad" so he says... i dunno, id rather have e500 even if the smaller engine diesel was better its just how we think over here.. lol

but thanks for your input..

Fair do, 0-60 is very arbitary, once on the "move" the diesel is quicker, especially in the mid ranges, although a 500 has the same torque, over a wider rev range, so it is faster, end of.

Face lift 500 sport, very very nice.

yea its going to be a facelift 500 for him.. any spec really all of them come pretty stocked..i have nothing against diesel my self but to be honest a 320cdi dont have a mark on any V8 benz in my opinion albeit faster or not..this has actually pushed me looking for a v8 and i could actually sell my car or trade in on a lovely E430 2002 i have seen on ebay.. i just dont want to loose my genuine AMG kit...

Sonny,

Keep your hard earned and get a 211 like your mate is doing. There are plenty who think the same as you do, they are nice cars and you'll find one with toys galore....

Why not say to your mate to sell to you once he fancies something else.

You get to see if the car is reliable, and you see how its been driven/owned before you.

Steve

I woudnt buy any mercedes petrol unless it's an AMG otherwise i'll have a CDi anyday over a 500, having said that, the new 500 is cool with 388bhp:D

BUT for the same money I can get an AMG and with AMG's you get the whole package!:thumb:

The Cdi 320 is more than up for the job of hauling a 211 around at speed. A 500 will make a nicer sound, but a bit quicker but use more fuel.

Hmmmmm, you can but it will be older than the 500 and more expensive to insure/maintain. Whether thats worth it, is a matter of choice but an A=an E63/55 I would find it hard to say no too if I could afford to run one.

you had a chavvy m3 your input on mercedes is quite hollow we consider our selfs die hard fans who wouldent drive other cars..:D you have a AMG with all the premiums of an AMG the reason he dont have a AMG is becasue our age and insurance costs ,the E500 is a bigger nicer car than my 203 and has more power than the highly respectable C55 (which i love btw) and minus the costs of AMG breaks, servicing and insurance i think its a wise move by him...

its not my mate is my brother.....hes wants to keep it for years...he wont be selling it for a while, he will probably supplement his collection with another car rather than selling his cars off.. much like me.. i do like to own more than one..im trying to plan my next move, which one to sell which one to keep ect...
