I bought (privately) an immaculate 05 e350 estate during the summer for my old man. It only has 15k on the clock so had its first service only in 06. The next service is due shortly but before its due to the car goes out of warranty. Is there anything I should do now before the warranty period ends?

Is there anyway I can find out what recalls there may have been between now and its last visit to the dealer?

Thanks
Ryan

Your dealer should be able to tell if some recall work has not been performed. But you should not be too worried about that because the recall work would be valid still after your warranty expires. I believe a 2005 car would anyway not have anything serious to be looked after but why not ask anyway.

Get the next service done early, before the warranty runs out. That way they can check on any recalls and do any work under warranty, which they would charge you for if you go in after the warranty has expired.

I can't recall any recent recalls, but there are regular updates that are installed free of charge when the vehicle is serviced.

Buying privately takes away the relationship that some of us might have with our local dealer and when our warranty was about to run out the dealership allowed us to take the car in early so that any issues were sorted out under the warranty. You might still be able to do this and nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Crikeys me,
Is this a new recall or have you been a tad forgetful?

Service bulletins are always being distributed and this is why I am so loath to use an independant specialist to work on my car. How out of date was the recall as there has not been a genuine one for an age?

Regards
John

I'm sure there was a seatbelt recall for the very early 211's and you have only listed two official recalls??? There have certainly been more than that.

One recall I can think of was to inspect the wiring had been properly secured for the SBC. This had to be photographed by the relevant workshop, so 'Big Brother' has a photograph of our underclothing

I did post all the recalls but it is 'somewhere' on the forum. Your list of TSB's looks bare and I'm sure there are a lot more but these are merely advisory notices for the workshops and small upgrades for our vehicles.

What your list highlights though is the reason why I always insist on my car being serviced by a main dealer. YES a thousand times yes it is more expensive than taking it to an independent garage, but does the independent proprietor get access to this information?? Will they carry out this work for free??? A 211 is a very complex car and needs spoiling. It will work without the service upgrades and if we don't know about them, then we will never miss them, but I always use the Mp3 upgrade as a perfect example.

Is that on your list of TSB's??

Early 211's with COMAND could not play Mp3's. On a normal car that would be it, if you wanted the feature, buy a newer car. With Mercedes-Benz they bought out a service upgrade that was installed in these older cars the first time they went in for a service. There was no charge and the COMAND was on a par with the latest model (at the time of upgrade)

If we have our car serviced by an independent then there is no way this will be done unless they are privy to all the latest bulletins being issued by Mercedes-Benz and when you look at the list posted by andy_cp we will soon realise that these are quite important and that list is incomplete. :) I would guess that looking at the spelling this list is American and they do not import the 320CDI estate nor any of the other smaller diesel E-class so do not expect a lot of information about the 4 cylinder, 5 cylinder and smaller V6 diesel engined powered vehicles.

John

To be perfectly honest John those are for the 211 E55 but thought ide post it as some may/do affect other 211's adross the range, should of stated that earlier though.;)

Hi Andy they were extremely helpful and I'm still extremely envious of your very nice car.

I have just acquired the details of the two most recent SBC recalls and the last was issued Worldwide inJuly\August 2005 and I'm wondering if that might be the one that has caused the removal of SBC Hold :)

I'm reading it and seeing what if any relevance it has.

Yours sincerely
John

For recalls i always go to the VOSA website. Shows 4 for the W211 - although one looks to be a duplicate.

I have just been reading both the folowing two recalls

Safety Recall #2005110001
Safety Recall #2005070007

These are the two that you possibly believe are duplicates.

I believe Brian WH had an early 211 that had a recall for possibly seat belts but that is a question as opposed to a statement.

The later of the two recalls that I have read requires a software upgrade and I'm wondering if the software had programming that either failed to activate SBC Hold, or switched it off? SBC isd fitted to all E-class during a certain period, but only a number of countries have the full SBS options. I wonder if the software was a blanket issue and it might possibly not reactivate SBC Hold?

The recalls only applied to certain VIN numbers but ALL vehicles were ordered to be recalled they were then examined and only the relevant ones had the work carried out.

That isn't a duplicate, it's two seperate issues. The first was to install a counter so the SBC unit would declare when it's rated life was reached, the other was to check and replace prematurely worn out units.

Hi all, interesting thread - I'm about to look at a 2nd hand (1 owner) 2004 E320CDI Estate (UK), and it's been to the dealer all it's life. What is a TSB? Sorry to be completely thick, but this woul dbe my first post 1995 MB as I've always run W123 and W124 cars.... how do "we" get access to such info to check to see these upgrades and changes have actually been done on our cars?

all the best...

TSB's are Mercedes Service Bulletins. Your car, when it goes in for service is checked by the Dealer via "Star Computer" and updates are done, usually free of charge. If yours has been regularily serviced they should be up-to-date.

Where i work truck main dealer we check the trucks for updates every service (6 weeks).

If they are to latest spec thats it no more work but usually entails updates for engine, adblue system, and the auto boxs, i have noticed quite a few times the engine sounds different afterwards maybe just my imigination.

The customer doesnt get charged for this or even know its taken place.

This is for the later stuff 56 plate onwards the earlier ones are not updatable.

A lot of owners do their own servicing but come to us for the clever stuff ie wiring etc.

Good example a few months ago bloke had his truck serviced by his usual garage, ebs light was on so they changed discs sensors exciter rings all very expensive stuff, came into us early hours of the morning i plugged in laptop 2 minutes and had found broken wire another 10 and it was repaired he was happy but also gutted at all the money he had spent.
