Hi all,

Anybody know what this message is for (pic attached)? Do I need to change the battery?

I got my pads changed over the weekend and the garage said that the load tester was reading 14V and so the alternator should be ok. I've not had any sluggish starts or anything like that, and the hybrid function still seems to work like normal, albeit a bit reduced due to the colder weather.

Thanks

does it give you ay clues in the owners manual? Could be the main battery is not holding 100% charge. Mine 2012 C class has recently had a new battery, no message like that on the dash but various functions stopped working, brake hold, start stop..

Hi Tonygw

No, I did go through the manual when I first started seeing the message a week ago, but it didn't give a clear indication as to what it could be.

I'll check again tonight, but think that maybe changing the battery will be the best action.

Thanks

There is something wrong with the photo presented in the OP's post. The photo shows a car with its engine running slightly above the idle speed with a seatbelt warning light on, in second gear with the car traveling at circa 7 mph!

Haha. Good spot. My passenger took it while we were in the car wash forecourt.

Thanks wongl.

UPDATE: It's not been coming on since Wednesday. Haven't changed anything, so not sure why. I've asked my friend to check on his OBD reader kit and maybe something will come on there.

Normally the user manual says take it to your nearest dealer with a big pot of ky jelly.

If its the same as a 211 theres a small secondary battery under the bonnet. If your Main (rear) battery is fine and you have not had messages such as "convenience features currently disabled" then I would check that out. That is the nessage i got after the original front battery (13 years old ) needed replacing. All that is assuming its similar in format to a 211

Sorry meant to say that my warning came on intermittently depending on a) whether it had been standing for a day or two and /or the weather. You may find it comes on again when it gets colder.

Yes, I've got a feeling this may be the case. When it's a little colder again, the battery message may come back.

At least yours happened after 13 years. Mine didn't even last 6 years.

Thanks

I've looked at the area where the battery is in the engine bay, and the battery looks nothing like a normal battery. It seems the E300 hybrid battery is different, and much more expensive. :gulp:

I'm not familiar with that model but if I got some documents right, you have the normal battery at the trunk, the hybrid (expensive) battery at the engine bay (unlikely shooting that battery warning) and you also have a very small battery at the engine bay (G1/13) which likely gives the warning.

Oh ok. I'm really hoping that's the case (don't want to spend thousands getting the hybrid battery replaced!). I'll try and look for the battery in the boot.

Thanks

Get a decent battery charger and try charging the battery up. A relatively inexpensive option. CTEK are well regarded.

The 'motorcycle' sized aux battery (12v 70aH) is circa £50-£60 (I had to purchase mine via the one and only official MB dealership in Hong Kong which costed circa £120 - long story).

Thanks everyone.

I'm trying to find the battery in my E300. The one in the engine bay seems to be the hybrid. Where is the normal secondary battery located in the boot?

If I get a general idea, it'll save me from taking off too much trim.

Thanks!

Well, today the car refused to start, so I had to charge it no matter what.

The battery was in the boot after all. Well, there were 2 batteries there. One large normal battery, and one much smaller battery. Meaning that there are 3 batteries in the E300!!

Apologies for mentioning the wrong location for the small battery. I must have used a different car model when searching for that info.

I'd suggest you to add more detailed model info either to your profile data or on a discussion thread. I can find eight different W212 E300 limousines, so better to refer to either as E300h or as 212.098 if you don't want to give the full VIN.

My mistake anyway, should have spent more time on the topic or not responding at all.

Hello - got this exact same problem, even with it being intermittently, cold weather etc.

Please, what happened and how did you fix ??

Thanks
