Hello

I have a W212 E Class Estate SE Premium Plus

I was wondering if things like the electric tailgate, the coming home/leaving home lights and interior lights would drain the battery. What would be the expected battery life?

Thank you

Honestly you have nothing to worry about. The ‘follow me home’ lighting will definitely not drain the battery. It only stays on for a short while anyway.

Just make sure not to leave the interior light switched on overnight etc.

Thank you for your help. In your experience how long would a battery last?

Most batteries come with a 3-4 year warranty. I wouldn’t expect anything less than that. :)

The battery in my coupé lasted 7 years before it was replaced.

my 2013 e-class still had the original battery when I sold it a few weeks ago, don't worry too much.

Cheap ones will start causing problems on year 3. OEM or upmarket should last at least for 5.

Do you know if the roadside assist which come with the service every year includes flat battery? I presume they won’t replace it though.

Green flag assisted me with this. Parking light for 48h drained my battery. It still had power but not enough to power up a V8 and all those electricals according to green flag. My suspicion is that my car only had life due to the auxiliary battery

Yes they should jump start your car.

I’m not sure if they’ll replace it.

The original batteries in our cars are very good quality. I would be very disappointed if they only lasted 3 - 4 years. Mine is almost 9 years old and still going strong. All you have to do to make a battery last is keep it fully charged. I've had 12 years out of a Varta car battery. Modern cars are not quite as good at keeping a battery fully charged as they used to be. Beside the follow me home lights the car takes some time to go to sleep. The combination of those two is pulling 20 amps for a few minutes. On top of that modern ecu controlled alternators deliberately under charge batteries to improve emissions and MPG. If you are fussy like me you will find that no matter how far you have driven the battery will accept a charge of a couple of amps for an hour or so. I hook up a battery charger once per week.

I'll admit to being irritated by the follow me home lights which come on even when I park in a lit garage. No they don't stay on long but they don't even start timing out until the last door has been shut and it's annoying that they can't be disabled. They annoy me every time I park in the garage and have to wait till they go off before unloading the shopping. I suppose star might be able to turn them off. It's one of those Germans know best things that I don't like about the car.

The battery in our July 2012 E350 is still the original one.

Surprised you can't turn they off. You can surely do it with the CL

Pretty sure the one in my 2007 clk is original.
It certainly hasn’t been changed in the last 5 1/2 years and looks original.

A) Follow you home lighting can be switched off or shortened. See your vehicle setting section of Comand.

BUT - a few minutes of lights doesn’t wear out batteries.

B) Most Mercedes batteries will last longer than a decade. I’ve been buying 10+ year old luxury cars for the last 17 years and I can’t remember one of them having a non-standard / factory battery. And I’ve never had to replace one because I use a battery conditioner if I ever think that a battery is running low.

C) What can kill a battery is leaving a car unused for six months plus, when the battery had been run low.

Mine lasted about 5 1/2 years but I'm a very low mileage user, mostly local runs
