I was wondering if anyone could help with this one. I would like to upgrade the rear lamp lens on my 2001 S Class to match the ones seen on the facelift S Class. My questions are:

Has anyone else done this?

Is it easy to do and if so does someone have a "How To..." guide?

Does anyone know where to get the replacement lens from or do you have to buy the full unit?

If anyone can recommend a website which sells this part that would be great!!

Best Regards,

Asim

Hi Asim,

Welcome to the forum. Yes it is possible to update the rear ligths to the new style.

From inside the boot lid if you open the carpet flap you will see some bolts that come through that hold the light cluster in place. Using the correct size socket you can remove these easily, I think there are about 6 or 7 each side, it really is plug & play.

I've done this before on lots of different cars. Unfortunatley the lens cannot be changed by itself. You have to buy the complete unit. You can try the main dealer (their prices aren't always as scary as you may think. Failing that try Steve at MBenznl (www.mbenznl.com) or Ebay.

I haven't got a how too but I'll see if I can take some pics to show you, otherwise try searching the forum for update light cluster, the technique is the same irrespective of the model.
Hope this helps

There is a forum member here who did exactly the same to his W220 pre- facelift. Do a search for the thread BUT he did have make a slight modification to the leanses (think it was removing a lug or something...) to make it fit. I think the member was known as "S500L" on the forum. It can be done for sure.

Flash

Yeah, as Flash stated you may need to trim some plastic of the light cluster but that will only be apparent when you take the old one out and compare it to the replacement unit or try to put it in place on the vehicle. Sometimes they add extra mounting points but you can usually sort that with a stanley knife or small hacksaw.

Cheers guys!!! Much appreciated. :D
