Is this a chronic problem with this car?
I have a 320cdi and despite the pads and discs being well maintained and changed when needed they continue to squeek at low speeds when coming to a standstill. I have had them cleaned off too.

I was once in front of another such car and i heard the same on that also:dk:

This is usually caused by the brake pads vibrating between the caliper pistons and the brake disc when very little pressure is applied to the pedal. Some have a thin metal shim between the pad and the piston, some don't, but it happens irrespectively. There should be a smear of copper grease (high melting point grease) applied between these surfaces, i.e. to the back of the pads prior to inserting them into the caliper and also to the surface between the shim and piston, (if you have shims). Make sure not to get any on the friction side of the pads or on the disc! While the pads are out, assuming they don't need replacing, roughen the friction side with emery paper or file to remove any glaze from the surface.

Mine have just started doing the same thing in reverse and as soon as it stops raining I'll be getting it sorted. :thumb:

Presume it's been a while since your brakes were checked or needed attention or someone forgot to apply a smear of copper grease.
The other cause could be a weak or broken anti-rattle spring which presses against the outer edge of the pads.

Not just a Merc syndrome!!

cheers for that, ive just never had it with any of my other cars, thought it was strange as ive had pads and discs changed twice since new

Just read through my previous comments and realised I haven't explained the fact that the copper grease acts as a damping agent and stops the pads vibrating, which is the noise you hear. It does tend to dry out over time.

So next time you hear another car doing it you'll know it's lack of copper grease :thumb:

My pads were squeaking like a ***** (brand new pads and discs) nd they were greased properly, however my retaining spring had gone rusty, and lots its 'twang' - because of this the pads weren't being held true and i nearly went deaf!

took them apart, fitted new retaining clips (£7) and its good as gold!

Oooooo!!! Do you fancy doing mine? :thumb::D
Always good policy to fit new ones while changing pads! lol
