Hello,

Just found your great website and registered. It's great to meet you all!

I drive a 56-plate B-class that has done 77,000 miles. I am a very infrequent driver of the car which has led to what I believe is a common problem: rusty rear brakes.

Whenever I drive the car I can hear a sound coming from the rear that sounds like the brakes are dragging. I don't know if this is the handbrake pads that are dragging or the normal brakes. My handbrake is weird as it only goes up two clicks and doesn't really hold the car steady (the car squeaks as if the handbrake is slipping if I park it on a hill and don't leave it in gear).

Does anyone have any tips or advice? Should I adjust the handbrake on each side? Do the brakes need a service? Is it a case of needing new pads and disks? I won't be able to get access to tools until I visit my brother-in-law's garage in a few weekend's time, however I'd like to know if anyone else has experience similar problems so I know what to look out for.

Many thanks,

Mark

Hi, Given that you have an issue with your brakes and, with respect, you appear to have limited mechanical knowledge I would suggest you get these looked at by either a professional or mechanically-adept friend. It may be rust on the discs, which would be visible, worn pads, partially seized calipers or a combination of any. Whatever you do make safety the prime concern. :)

Sounds as if the return springs on the rear handbrake brake shoes have gone allowing them to rub on the inside of the disc-drum
You probably need new rear discs/drums shoes and springs. If the rear discs have /shoes have been neglected they may be tricky to remove- almost certainly an MOT fail as they are?
