The new haswell based laptops arent really much quicker than previous incarnations but they use less power and run cooler for the same speed.

A haswell based i5 with an intel SSD would be where my money would be being spent if I were to be replacing your existing machine. It will be the SSD that gives you the real performance advantage over what you are running currently.

Thanks, though I installed a SSD in the laptop 18 months ago. It failed after 12 months, but the Intel replacement is working so far. It's inability to charge the battery and be very hot causing shut downs means it's time for replacement. Some thing smaller and more portable this time.

Regarding the heat issue.

Have you lifted the keypad and checked for fluff around the heatsink and fan? Suggest clearing this out with a can of compressed air as it might alleviate the issue considerably.
