Hi, everyone - 1st post on here.

I have been looking for a good 500SL for a while now, I haven't really had time to see many - I've seen about 3 over the last 4 weeks. I was looking to spend about 10K and want something that's usable rather than very precious!

Power/performance-wise is the 420 that much different?

Problem is I haven't really got the time to travel hundreds of miles for viewings.

I am planning a trip to Silchester Garage on Saturday to view the 500SLs they have there.

I live in Gloucestershire so would be interested in anything that's not too far away.

A fine choice of vehicle. :)

The black 500sl at Silchester garage looks a nice car, reasonable miles, and a good price. Not as keen on the blue one, no mention of mileage, and I dont like the interior.

Good luck, with the search, and keep us posted on how you get on with your search.

Phoned them today - the black one has 130K the other one 170K (I think that's what he said).

Milage isn't really a problem as long as things have been fixed and replaced as needed.

I'll have to see how they drive the 2 500s I've driven were totally different power-wise, one had done 101K and the other 130K- the one with the higher mileage was like a rocket compared to the other one, it was seriously more powerful with loads of grunt coming in from about 2500rpm - I'm hoping this is the norm and the slower one is not typical of the mighty V8.

Your car looks stunning - great colour!

couple of thing to not 420 versus 500 engines one single chain the other is double chain 420 and older cousin 380 requires chain to be checked and on the safe side replaced at around 150k it is not a cheap process and actually no both engines it best. if no history is the documenting that u have to bare this in mind when tackling cars with these engines.

be careful with and rust and bodywork as sl and slc require alot of maintenance in terms welding and the like.

but they are gr8 cars, i personally have one of the first 350 slc 1972 tax exempt historic car, it is still going strong mechanically

Fully agree the timing chain should be inspected and changed if found suspect.

I changed mine, with the help of a friend in a couple of hours, for the cost of a new chain and tensioner, about £150, so not a costly operation.

I've bought the black 500 from Silchester. Great condition and has had quite a bit of restoration done about 5 years ago. Full history & loads of paperwork.

Pick it up in a week or so:bannana:

Congratulations, Im sure you will love it, keep us updated.
