water pump

Hi, recently had a water leak on my 2001 Vito 112 which I could kind of make out that it was coming for water pump, had no problems just filled up rad with 1 ltr or 1/2 Ltr depending on drive length. Last night was stuck in traffic and then the warning low water light came on temp gauge never went over half. I travelled for another 5 miles to get to my destination but then suddenly the engine just cut out no power etc. Pulled over and then when lifting the bonnet there was lots of steam coming from the bottom of the engine. It was dark but could make out that that it looked like one of the belts was at an angle. I filled it back up with water but it seemed to just gush out the bottom ( ? water pump) and the engine sounded like it had no power to start (like the alternator had stopped) but still had lots of battery power. New water pump had been on order to fit this weekend but now worried. Have I done more damage to engine by what I have described your thoughts gratefully received.:fail

Your temperature gauge may not have worked properly because there was no liquid in contact with it if the engine have lost a lot of coolant. Had a similar overheating incident once- first thing that alerted me was some blue exhaust smoke on the overrun. Temporary fix and coolant refilled and continued on my journey. Two weeks later piston rings gave up the ghost! You may have got away with it but possibly not. Only thing is to effect repairs and see how it runs- it might be seized- does it turn over? [ I would change the oil as well] Engine cutting out doesn't bode well I have to say.

Thank you for your quick response, it churns but does not turn over sounds like a whining noise but too scared to try for too long in case more damage, am going to replace the water pump and indeed as suggested the oil too and fingers crossed.
