I'm new to MB, with E320cdi estate, brilliant car, I'm used to water temp runnig around 85-90 on other cars, on Benz, indicating below 80!
Is this normal, or should I replace thermostat?
Your thoughts welcomed.

80 ish is normal mate. What year and mileage is your car?

Failed thermostat ?

When starting from cold, feel if the top hose & top of radiator are getting warm while the temp gauge is still low, ie 40 - 60.
If so, the thermostat has failed-open.
Also, if it has failed the temp probably take 5 miles or more to reach 80 ish.

Mine has been running cool at 70 ish since chipping, I removed the power chip two weeks ago and the temp runs at just below 80, must be all that extra fuel washing and cooling the cylinders!

I reckon you're right Jimmy. The engine management system of my Lotus Carlton overfuels the engine at full throttle and high revs for that very reason - to cool the combustion chambers.

Took the plunge bought new stat, problem solved, temp now reading 87 as stat should do, was only just over 75 before. Fuel economy seems better as well.
