Is it possible to run the Waze App on a Garmin Nuvi?

It now offers more functionality than Garmins standard Maps but my iphone 6s is just too small for my eyes, making it potentially dangerous to use as I have concentrate on the screen at certain parts.

To assist with the answer and not to be rude:

  • Yes I have tried Command and it's limitations.
  • Yes I have tried the factory BMW (navteq) MKIV system and it fairs little better than Command.
  • I also have a TomTom unit + two Garmin Nuvi Widescreen units

I just like Waze and as more people become users it becomes more and more powerful.

I don't have a definitive answer, but why would you think it might be possible?

Wase have an app for iOS and for Android, no idea what OS Garmin are running but I don't think it's either of those?

PS I use Waze when driving in town. COMAND is useless without TomTom Live Traffic, which I don't have. But on Motorways COMAND is king.

Waze is a direct threat to Garmin and other traditional Sat Nav makers, it's like MB offering their tech and services to BMW.

So it’s a no then?

“Why would I want to do this?”

I like the app more than the native Garmin or TomTom.

Both Garmin & TomTom have a facility to add apps to their devices.

I do not want to spend more money on more devices/hardware.

To me APPS are the way to go. The hardware is a utility.

It certainly might be possible.
I had a Navman that invisibly ran Windows CE in the background. A simple hack in the startup would take it to the CE 'desktop' screen. From there you could install Igo and possibly others, and from there either select your preferred nav software or boot straight into Igo.

Thank you Ted.

Seriously guys.... I have an iphone 6s that even when held in front of my beautiful face, is not the easiest thing to read.

OEM is obviously the ideal but that is ruled out as it is so locked down it is not worth the time or effort.

Garmin & TomTom hardware is great and can be made to look OEM with little effort (if you like that sort of thing & I do).

The way ahead will see us move to more app based tools with hardware simply being a utility (good) but until we reach that point I wanted to see if there was a way that a device like a Garmin that comes with "apps" as a download menu item, could download Wase?

It looks like the answer is no.

Presumably these are Garmin Apps & TomTom Apps (respectively)?

Again the issue is that Waze is available for iOS and for Android.

The term 'App' can be misleading because it may not be clear to a layman that it is not a universal term, instead the each App is specific to the platform that it was designed for.

iOS is the intellectual propriety of Apple, so unlikely that any other hardware manufacturer (e.g. TomTom or Garmin) will be able to use it on their devices.

Android OS on the other hand is available for other hardware manufacturers to use.

So unless Garmin use Android OS, and they have made it possible to install third-party Apps on it (and I don't know the answer for that for certain, but in all probability it is unlikely), then the answer would be: No, you cannot install the Waze App of Garmin hardware.

Exactly, app's are applications. they are created for their respective operating systems.

Your only option would be to re-flash the operating image to a basic outdated Windows CE OS - an OS that virtually noone supported anyway, then get a very old version of Wayz on it (is the CE version even supported?) and try to get it running on the unit.
However the USP of Wayz over Google maps is the user supported updates, how would you get data to the Garmin to get these updates? it doesnt have any SIM card slot does it?

Never gonna work. Best bet would be to get an Android phone with a large screen and increase the UI size.

Or buy a cheap Android tablet, tether it to your mobile phone for Internet access, install Waze, and then stick the contraption on top of your dashboard.

Then tell anyone who asks that you've got COMAND NTG5.5 with Apple CarPlay. Job done!

But on a serious note.... setting aside the technical explanations, it's a non-starter.

Get yourself a Ram X-grip mount and use Google maps on your phone, by far the best satnav and its free!!!
Waze is very good but it tries to take you up every back alley.
