Hi all,

I have a 190e 1.8 manual,
I turned the key and on the first crank it sounded weak and wasn’t able to turn start the engine, every time i tried after it sounded weaker and weaker, almost burbly. now it doesn’t even turn. and im scared to try again in case engines seized.

I did notice as i was just about to turn the engine off after driving it that it had started sounded like it was struggling to keep turning but ignored it.

I’ve had starting problems in the past but they’ve been simple things i’ve fixed such as starter and battery. There’s oil in the engine, ive been meaning to change the spark plugs but i haven’t checked the state of them, could this a possibility?

I have also recently taken the rear of the exhaust off up to the cat to fix the exhaust, but have taken for a short drive with it off, would that cause these kind of problems?

Any help and advice would be appreciated

Plugs out and turn in over by hand to see how tight it is.

If it turns free the crank it with plugs out and see if you get any fluid out of the cylinders??

it’s very tight, what could this mean? and what should i do next, thanks for the reply

Could be bearing failure, hve you fully charged the battery and checked for any drive belt problems/siezed ancillarys Etc.

Tricky makes a good point, could be something in the ancillaries making it tight.

Remove the belts and turn it again with plugs out.

If it’s still tight after that I would get a borascope and look for scoring in the bores. If they look good the it’ll be sump off for a look.

You could always drain the oil and inspect it for swarf?
