If you have the manual for your PC it will tell you exactly how to add more memory (without the manual the challenge is normally working out how to get the case open!).
We were given an old Sony Vaio desktop, I was able to find and download the manual for that from the Sony website. I whacked that up to 1 Gb memory (the max. that machine could take), and general use with XP Home was much improved.
I've used this lot for memory recently:

No problems at all with them.

RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com would be my choice. Not only will it provide the correct memory specs for your individual PC it will provide basic instructions for it too.
