As the weather is bad, I have been prepared this year. Got a 64 litre "Really Useful Box" in my boot (which is 71cm by 44cm) and have put 100kg of rock salt in it.

Is this going to damage the boot floor with so much weight concentrated in a relatively small space?

I have pulled it right to towards the boot opening so technically it's sat right on the spare wheel - or rather the probably flimsy board over the spare wheel!

Just out of interest, while I'm thinking about the boot - why on Earth have MB made the boot floor of the 212 so it isn't flat?! 2/3rds of the way back it raises which makes pushing anything heavy that far back almost impossible!

100kg is rather heavy, but personally I would get that weight distributed over the rear axle. In very slippery conditions, I get 2 x 20kg bags of gravel tucked in the rear over the axles as much as possible and one on each side. Works well. In only very severe conditions, I may have to hook on the snow chains over the winter tyres, but that's happened only once in around 10 years when I got stuck in some very soft snow :(

You need yourself a bit of 18mm MDF, that should solve both issue.

That would make is slide around like anything!

I was going to just put bags of rock salt in the boot and let them move around but I didn't want bits of salt going everywhere.

i tend to drive with about 60kg in the boot, which is spread evenly due to it being my P.A kit.

it's done wonders in the snow.

Because the car is not designed with the purchaser/end user in mind!

All cars are pretty poor.
Until you can stand suitcases upright and get in one per passenger then car design is failing.
I recall the saab 9000 used to be good it had lights in on the sides etc so that when you wanted tools and a spare tyre hey presto light but then in the 9-5 you lift the covering and hey it covers the light bulb which they moved!?

Ok I can get 4 suitcases in the E class but they do have to be of a certain size.

I routinely carry that kind of weight around in the back of the wagon, either as cat litter or coal, or music gear: it's the reason we got an estate. I've no reason to think a saloon less able with just a man's weight in the boot: the estate is supposed to be able to take two passengers back there and a greater weight as luggage.
