I fitted brand new CLS wheels and tyres to my 13 year old P reg 210 estate.

The rear tyres (Continental Sport Contact 2, OEM from new) have lasted only 15k miles, which I am quite surprised about. The fronts (also 245/45 17) are only about 1/3 worn.

My estate has a mere 150hp, but the middle part of the rear tyres has worn quicker, just like the tyres used to on my much more powerful CLK 55.

I don't need high performance or ultra high performance tyres (as the car really is not that fast, and I almost never drive it above 90mph) -- but am finding that these are the only categories for the 245/45 17 tyre size.

Any ideas of replacement tyres?

Falken 912s are about £115 each fitted, and Continental SC 2 or 3 are about £155 each fitted.

Would be grateful for thoughts and suggestions.

PS. The car looks great and feels more stable with the wide tyres.

Thought about the Falken 452 Sean ?

I have 245/40/17 's on mine , and they are £75 each ....

Bung the local tyre place a tenner to fit them , job done.

They are a good tyre as well .

I thought 912s were cheaper than 452s ..

Where are you getting them for £75?

I'll switch to Continental Sport Contact next time I change on my C-Class - same size as you're after - they seem to last twice as long as the Pirelli's I have on now.

I think I saw some online for £105 recently when shopping around for winter tyres.

4 Continental ContiSportContact3 - £460.

£100 for the front 225/45/17 and £130 for the rear 245/40/17

"Apsley Tyres" in Hemel Hempstead - but obviously if they can fit and balance for this anyone using the same wholesaler should be able.

In fact from memory aren't there only 2 companies that import tyres into this country, if you go high enough up the supply chain?

If your tyres are wearing in the middle only - overinflated?

This crossed my mind too .. the difference between the edges and middle bit of the tyre is about 1.5 to 2 mm

Nice wheels !! :)

Car could do with a clean though !! :p

Regards Damian.

PS - Good prices for the tyres !

Sean are they 245/45/17 or 245/40/17 ?

I opted for more Pirelli on the rump yesterday. Continentals were quite a lot cheaper, but I decided to stick with Pirelli as that's what's on the front.

I also chose to stand by my local independent fitter - first time for years he's not been competitive, so I ended up paying a little more than I really needed to on this occasion.

got 2 Falken FK 452s (245/45 17) fully fitted from tyres online @ mytyres.co.uk: cheap passenger, summer, winter tyres and tyre dealer for £88.60 each, total £177.20

amazing price.

Let's hope the fitting center does a good job!

Truly amazing price for that size....Mytyres give two quotes for what is essentially the same tyre £88.60 & £102.40...Sensibly you went for the lower one! By the way, Camskill have these tryes for £96 each and you still would have to pay for fitting!!

I saw that too .. am waiting for a call from mytyres telling me that they have mispriced.

Still no shipping confirmation ...

Falken FK452s 245/45 17 fitted this morning at Allway Car Center in Plaistow ... I selected them because they had good feedback on the mytyres website. I have not been able to leave feedback on mytyres for Allway Car Center.

Allway is also a car service and repair place, and tyres are a part of the operation.

Despite me watching them, they still managed to scratch the edge of the rim of my CLS wheels .. and this is after they taped it up. The tyre removal machine they use is just rubbish.

The balancing machine is mounted on a wooden crate!

The chap did not change either of the valves .. I noticed this too late as the new tyres were already on.

On balancing, he took the wheel off when it was still showing 5g on "inner" .. I let that go because it didn't seem worth it.

When balancing the next wheel, I think he confused inner and outer such that after two attempts, it was still reading 20:20. He took off the wheel and told me it was OK as "sometimes the machine is not accurate"!!!

I asked him nicely to do it again, to peel all the weights off and start again. He hesitated for a bit, then took wheel back to balancing machine. He then said I was trying to tell him how to do his job.

By now, he figured out his mistake and 2 spins later, we got 0:0.

Not going there again in a million years.

First impressions of FK452s are good:

Quiet and comfortable, much more so than the Continental SC2s, but then the SC2s were worn and old.

Thread pattern of the FK452s are quite nifty too.

I had a similar problem with a mytyres fitting centre in Chesham...in my case they could not fit the tyres as their machine had broken and it was still broken a week later...to be fair, this was during the snow earlier in the year so that may have delayed getting the machine fixed....eventually went and collected the tyre, got a refund for fitting from mytyres and got WIM in Chesham to fit tyres for me.....the original fitting centre was a bit like the one you describe and I am not sure if I would have trusted them with my AMG alloys!!
