What a difference my new broadband speed makes.....

Just had a BIG moan at BT and they have now lifted my download speed from about 300k/sec to nearly 5m/sec.
Amazing what some strong threats do.

The bottom line is that my son (who is a local radio DJ) buys and downloads many of his tunes.
Last week he downloaded 26 tunes from one site.
Before the speed increase this could have taken well over an hour - easily.
The other night it was all done in less than 10 minutes.
What it must be like for people with 20m/sec I shudder to think.

And BT have just phoned me and offered to reduce my monthly payment by £2 providing I sign up for another 12 months.

Was it an artificial cap or have you new hardware?

Are you saying it took a phone call to go from 300kbs to 5mbs? Wow what was the issue? Had you used BT's webpage and tested your download speed and realised you weren't getting it? Or did they send you an accelerator? Or just a flip of a switch?

Sounds a bit like a stuck profile.

I've just moved to BT from Virgin - first 2 days I was at 500k profile speed. But a bit of googling found out there is a 10 day stabilisation period where they see what speed you line will support (didn't see that in the small print before signing up). We are only 1 mile from the exchange and have very good attenuation/noise figures being reported so after a couple of days sure enough - it shot up to 7150k profile and 6.9M speed test results.

Anyway one of the thing I learned is that if your have a bad period - noise on the line, dodgy connections in the housem, lightning storm etc the profile speed will drop. It will recover afterwards, normally in hours, sometimes days and sometimes it will get stuck.

Dave - have you been to www.speedtester.bt.com - this will tell you your profile speed and actual throughput. Useful for future reference - I'm running every vouple of days and printing the result at the moment - just so I have a record if something goes wrong.

Is this for BT customers only? I tried it and it doesn't work on my number - although the line is with BT the ISP is currently AOL (changing back to BT though)

I think so as woks on dads bt service , but not here at home

Try resetting your modem at busy traffic times - say 6pm - when the noise on the line should be at it's highest.

I-d rather try speediest.net . Real speeds, real tests, real people.

Bt speed test is based in New York with g-hub in London/fiber Amsterdam.

Worked in IT security for 10 years so i know few things .

Virgin suppose to be good . I have Be there now. Real speed is around 19.8mbps day time and over 21.4 mbps night time. My local exchange is just round the corner( less than 25 yards ) .

I've just used speedtest and got this result


trouble is I know I only get just over 1mb - so this must be a spurious reading - trouble is it's happened quite a few times

now I got this reading,,



it sticks around the .5mb then lurches to the higher result.....weird

I'm waiting for my new broadband to kick in, I've kept the same supplier but changed product. I'm currently on 8MB ADSL, but have elected to move to a 20MB ADSL2+ product instead.

I can actually see the exchange out of the living room window (it's about half a mile away) so I hope for good things when it gets upgraded, particularly as I have gone for the top spec. product that does not suffer from traffic shaping and should give me line speed 24/7. Estimated line speed is 14MB..

I have had to spring for a new router (£65) as my old one doesn't support ADSL2+, but hey. I also get 5 times the amount of included bandwidth (20GB/month) as my old deal for the same cost per month. I should have changed ages ago..
