Hi I’ve got a w204 2.2 2011, my battery keeps draining so it looks like new one is needed.
When I’ve took it to the garage he has told me it needs a stop start battery but I don’t have a stop start button.
Is this correct? If so could someone point me to the right direction
Thanks
Andy

Andy he may be suggesting that you need what’s known as an AGM battery, which are now common because they’re used on cars with stop/start. However, they were used on some models before stop/start was introduced, especially when the battery is in the passenger compartment or boot as they’re safer in the event of an accident.

You do need to be sure that you fit the battery that the car is expecting - whether that’s an AGM battery or traditional lead acid battery - as the charging profile and peak voltage is slightly different. If the wrong battery is fitted then you wonnt get the best out of it and over time it will likely need premature replacement.

Do try your local main dealer parts counter - or Mercedes-Benz of Newcastle, Edingburgh and one or two others who read on eBay - as their battery prices can sometimes be very competitive and you’ll be sure that it’s the right part. If you ask then they’ll tell you whether it should be AGM or not, and what the capacity is.

I have found that when buying from the parts coubter in person, then they’ll often pop it on the car for you when you collect it, which might mean that you’re prepared to pay a little more to have it done and done right.

Buy a Varta battery; they're the OE supplier. There are several online retailers on eBay; I use batterymegastore, but Tayna are pretty much the same, and there are others. Next day delivery is the norm.

Thanks, another question, is it just a straight swap or will I have to get things recoded? Just not sure whether to go to a garage or just change myself.
Always had Vauxhalls and it’s been fine but not sure if merc will be the same.
Thanks

Might you not have a battery drain fault? If you are going to renew the battery and the new one drains you need to get the car looked at further.

How could I find this out? I’m just thinking it’s an old battery, I’ve had the car 3.5 year and haven’t changed it yet

Look on one of the battery poles for a date stamp.

If you're handy with a multi meter it's a question of checking every fuse - search the forum, there are numerous posts here and on YouTube how to do it. If not a quicker approach would be to take the car to a local MB indie to get a STAR diagnosis. If you are certain it's the battery then replace but check the output from the alternator before you do so - should show 14v plus with the engine running. It's an annoying problem with an MB when the battery keeps draining!

Rather than fit AGM battery have a look at EFB they are cheaper and are good if you do a lot of short journeys. They perform better than a standard lead acid battery, AGM is not generally recommended for non stop start use.

Not sure where you get that from tbh. My 2004 e320 had AGM as standard , stop start wasn't even around then. Its all about charge rate and holding charge , not stop start . Stop start is merely a functional option. Most batteries listed today just quote ' stop start compatible ' so you can use either or .

Is efb a new thing ?

Enhanced Flooded is pretty new tech. Volkswagen had stop start in 1984 in the Polo Formel E

Don’t mix up having a stop/start button with the car having stop/start eco technology.

OP , it's not unusual for an MB to brick its own battery in short order (3 to 5 years) , But you car is a non stop/start car so a close check on the charging system and a check for a parasitic drain might be worth doing before buying a new battery.

Mine ate a top of the range Exide in just over three years. Same battery in my Jag had been in there 5 years when I sold it.
