Just removed part of the carpet in the boot on the passenger side and noticed what sort of looks like a mobile phone (without a keypad) and "Ericcson" written on it wired up. There is a little flap that appears to have a sim card in it too and a green light that flashes.

The thing is I already have a car kit in the car in the centre armrest.

Any ideas what this additional device does or is it part of it ?

I can post a photo if this makes no sense!

Oh its a W209 by the way 320 petrol - although I guess that makes relatively little difference!

Maybe a tracker or some device that dials home if the alarm goes off....

Probably so... sounds like a tracker to me.

The type you describe allows the vehicle to be tracked online using generic mapping applications like google maps in real time using 3G or it could be used to store data for later upload.

Possibly the previous owner of the car had an anxious wife or girlfriend that's behind the fitment of this device. Mind you, with a name like yours... are you sure your better half isn't keeping tabs on you?

yep as sp!ke says a cheapo type tracker....

p.s. kill it immediately.. someone knows where you are at all times otherwise.

Right - took the SIM card out and disconnected it.

The guys at my local merc indy said they had seen these before. As a previous poster said, it lets an (as yet unidentified) 3rd party phone it up and get the position of my car.

lol, hit it with a brick!!

Here is a picture

I doubt if its a tracker surely no one would be stupid enough to mount it in such an obvious place?

Pop down to Southampton and put it on a ship bound for New York.

It should read Ericsson. I'm not aware of them producing trackers but they do produce GSM modems and a tracker would need one. Is there another, GPS device connected to it?

Any chance of a closer pic or a pic of any data plate? I'm pretty certain that is not a tracker.

I agree it's not a tracker cant find any instance of ericcsson producing one either, we sure its not for mobile data? One company I worked for the Exec Fleet Audi A8, MB S Class, BMW 7 had mobile data so you could actually plug your laptop in the car and get a network conection, long before 3G etc, in these cars the comms part was put behind the panel after the C pillar maybe this one was in the boot?

There are 2 antennas of some description connected to it that are under the bumper. One looks very much like a GPS reciever and the other like a GSM reciever.

I'll post some more pics in a bit. What is the "data plate" by the way ?

By 'Data Plate' I meant simply any serial number/model number etc printed on the device.
