What kind and how much driving?

Some interesting figures here and interesting to see what people are doing. I commute by bus/train into the City mid week so all my mileage is domestic.

So for those of you doing hardcore amounts of driving, as in way more than my pitiful 12-13k a year. How do you keep yourself amused? What cars are you doing this driving in?

As mentioned I do 260 odd miles in one hit, maybe 20 min break in the middle. I've taken to audio books to keep my brain ticking over. My W211 E320 seems pretty much comfortable enough but I like the idea of an S320/350 going forward.

I was doing the big miles in typical large saloons, E class, S class, 5 series etc. I did run a 2 ltr Passat for a short while and couldn't wait to get back in to a 3 ltr. I ran petrol and diesel and saw no difference in MPG, both were designed to do the motorway cruise.

As far as keeping amused, I admit to making a large amount of hands free calls to the offices that I was managing at the time and, after hours would just enjoy the radio or my own music.

I wouldn't believe anyone who says that they don't observe other drivers stupidity when doing a lot of long trips.

I must admit, I've said the same about engines. I wouldn't want a small engined car for motorway driving. I love the idea of my motorway cruising in a V8 but realistically my CLS63 does almost half the MPG of my E320 so I'll stick with a hefty diesel. Plus the accessible torque is nice.

You really can't help notice some of the other drives habits. When you have the cruise control set to 70 and you pass someone, who then passes you, then slows down etc. One I do recall was a guy driving a Honda Civic on the M4. Was sat in lane three going a variety of speeds but was really erratic. He disappeared off into the distance and about 15 minutes later, the traffic slows and the car was on it's roof. No one injured but no other vehicle. Most odd.

DrFeelGood - What do you think is the comfiest cruiser you've driven?

It has to be the S class, the sheer size of it makes for a very relaxed ride. I swapped it for the 5 series and although the Beemer was more engaging to drive I found at the time that I preferred a more detached feeling.

E320 CDi or CLK320.

Spotify for amusement ;)

Get around 52mpg on the E, 29ish on the Clk. Hence now the E is the primary. :)

That's interesting. I guess for literally wafting up and down the motorway, it's about the comfort and the ease. Good to hear the S Class is up there as I'd been looking at the 2007/08 era S Class to eventually replace my E.

I must admit, my E320 is very very good for the driving I'm doing. Although I do keep looking at cushions to make the seat a little softer haha

I don't mind Spotify but with commuting 2-3 hours a day and listening to music for that duration, I'm all over the audiobooks. :)

Most frequent when in Scotland office 22 miles each way M8 split between S class most days but try to use Maxi Scooter at least once a week while the weather is good, when traveling (for work) currently Dutch then German autobahns in what ever the good people of Europcar put me. Typical year 16-20K miles

I just do around town (16mpg) or leisurely motorway runs up to 80ish of a hundred miles or so (26mpg) total about 9k per year (daily driver). None of which really requires or uses 500bhp....but then we all know we should really be driving something else.

I probably do about 30 kms a year, split between the wife's RAV4, my bike MT-07 Tracer and my new-to-me CLK. I have to say that I lurve driving the CLK :D:D

Not particularly hardcore at ~20,000 miles, but considering that barely any of those are travelling on business then it’s a fair amount for social, domestic and pleasure, and all of them are in an ML63 AMG. For the driving described in my previous post, my car is a 6.2 M156 and family car is 5.5 M157.

For amusement, the act of driving is the amusement, complimented with Apple Music. Very recently started listening to Seen Through Glass podcast, but otherwise podcasts don’t do it for me. Never tried an audio book. Music only in the Dazzler mobiles :)

I keep meaning to look into some podcasts. I have all the Ricky Gervaise ones with Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington but listened to them so many times I almost know them word for word.

Audiobook wise, I started with a few Star Wars ones as a big fan of the franchise. Then branched into a couple of horrors with World War Z and The Exorcist, currently listening to The Meg as had been waiting for the audiobook prior to the movie coming out. I tend to listen to them for an hour or so and then swap to a bit of music.

Daily commute is 34 miles in and through to the other side of Reading. Bimble down the A4, sit in a bit of traffic on the IDR, bimble out to the northern edge. Reverse on the way home.

The Zoe was probably far better for this task, but I'm definitely enjoying it more in a twin turbodiesel V8 Audi.

30 mile daily commute now down to 18 miles after moving house done in my banger poverty spec 1986 SB3 Civic. On top of those 30 miles, I'm probably doing an additional 100-200 miles a week after commuting miles.

500+ miles to various locations all over England and a few miles for personal use every week if I need the space in company car 2018 VW Tiguan.

0 mile currently on my second 1986 SB3 Civic. In the process of getting it on road to take my banger SB3 off road to build Motul replica track car with.

Driven about 100 miles in the Nissan Leopard now. Will be going into storage for winter.

The 280ce has taken new ownership under my fiance. However, shes still in the process of obtaining her driving license and isn't allowed to drive it until I'm confident with her driving. Of course she will by no means daily driving the merc. We will either buy her a daily banger or I'll pass her the keys to my SB3 civic which will mean a new classic daily for me! Wheeey!

I did close to 90k over 2 years when my son and mum were ill in 2012/13, with almost daily visits to the children's hospital in Oxford and same to Portsmouth for my mum. Since then around 11k a year. Around 3k on runs to the west country and the rest on station pick ups and drop offs. Car sits on the driveway doing virtually nothing in the meantime. It's times like this that I wish we had access to a local car club. Although given where we live, permanent access to a car is essential unfortunately.

We are both now retired so no more commuting. The CLK and SLK both cover 2-3000 miles per year just doing nothing special. The 124 covers more at around 6-8000 miles including to and from Italy and daily use when we are there. This year I had to take the CLK to Italy too. Surgery for a detached retina meant no flying. Really noticed the difference in fuel consumption. 124 around 28mpg. CLK 42 mpg. Crossed the Morandi bridge in Genova the morning before it collapsed.

You go home in reverse? I suppose it stops the odometer racking up the miles. Seems a bit extreme, though :)

Cheers,

Gaz
