What on earth is the point of this part (W212 boot)?!

Hi all,

Does anyone know what the point of this curved plastic thing in the attached picture is? Every car has it quirks, but my god, I hate this plastic piece with a vengeance. Makes the boot harder fill, wastes so much space when luggage is in there.

Anyone ever removed it? I know later models had a smooth 'bump' with no plastic.

I can't think of one good reason for it, other than to make the space less usable/practical.

If it has to stay, then consider this thread purely therapeutic...

I assume it’s just a buffer to stop things smashing into the rear seats.

I think they either changed it on later models, or maybe the models with the rear folding seats, they changed it to this, which is infinitely better IMO!

I wonder if I can convert it... I was thinking of converting the seats to folding anyway...

This would be so infinitely more practical for me. I think I need to make it happen...

If anyone knows if it's possible to simply remove that plastic piece, let me know! I'll have a poke around myself, too...
