Alfie will hopefully know, but if anyone else can assist.....I'd be grateful. Do I just have to buy a phone that fits (from ebay) and try to get a duplicate SIM from my contract service provider - ORANGE?

Part number of the cradle (fittinf mould) is A203 820 06 51

Does it charge the phone when it is in the cradle? Presumably it uses an external aerial on the car?

Yes it will charge the phone and use the external aerial.

You will also get full control of the phone through the steering remote with phone numbers in the cluster display (& through COMAND if fitted).

You may not be able to use a Nokia 6310 in there, depends upon the age of the car and the PSE module plus potentially firmware version on the phone.

If it's a very early cradle then I belive that you may even need a 6150.

An alternative is to buy a Viseoo Bluetooth module.

I've got a couple of 6210's with mains chargers too lying around in my study if it helps. You probably won't be able to get a duplicate SIM, most consumer mobile providers have stopped doing this. You may need to get a Pay as you Go card for the mobile.

I've Pm'd Alfie too, and given him my VIN. Hopefully he will be able to tell me excatly what I need. The Viseo BT adapter is about £300 I think. If it takes a 6210 I would certainly be interested in buying one of you A-Avantgarde if that phone fits. Its a 2001 (MY02) CLK55 by the way.

The cradle is for 6100 series phones were the external helix antenna was abandoned. A 6210 being the first model specifically intended for this cradle, followed by 6310 and 6310i.

followed by 6310 and 6310i.

There is still an active market for used and refurbished 6310i models.

When they were discontinued ISTR there was a kind of 'last orders please' situation and corporates were buying batches.

So the downside is that they are not that cheap. The upside is that you should be able to buy one in reasonable condition and get a warranty with it.

Ive seen the 6310 phones on eBay, refurbed and with guarantee for around £30.

Should I put my 6210 and 6310i on sale then? :) Phones are in perfect condition (I have even new batteries) but I would not give those away unless someone familiar to me happened to need one (would go for free but this starts to be unlikely now that there is this ViseeO BT adapter). The same attitude may make the used phones market limited.

Yes that's right. The earlier cradles have a cut-out for the antenna on the earlier phones.

As PeterG's car is a 2001 I'd be surprised if a 6310/i worked unless the previous owner previously replaced the PSE.

Viseeo is the perfect solution for these , expensive but saves an awful lot of messing around

Just bought a Nokia 6310 of eBay for £21. Put a PAYG SIM in it. When I travel distances I will divert my main phone to the car phone, should be OK I think!

Hi Peter, have you got the phone yet? If you haven't had confirmation about which PSE module you have (or tested a 6310i in it) I'm afraid it may not work. Let me know if you have any trouble with it.

Will do. Alfie told me it was a 6310 holder, that's the phone I bought. I just put it in the cradle this morning and it has not yet got past the 'initialising phone' message, nt sure how long that takes. I will check it out properly tomorrow.

It shouldn't sit on 'initialising phone' for any more than a few seconds. It sounds like the PSE module isn't the right version for the 6310i (to be honest being a 2001 car I would have been suprised if it supported the 6310i).

I agree but I was not expecting this "initialising phone" message either. There is a bulletin giving a warning about old SIM cards but in this case the car should say "telephone being started".

Best to look up the PSE part number. I wish the owner was closer to me, I could give him my control unit that has been updated (or the phone swapped with my 6210).

I'll go out today and see if I can get it sorted. It is a new vodafone SIM card in it so that shouldn't be an issue.

The Nokia 6310 defnately does not work, it never gets past the 'initialising phone' stage. Big disappointment!

Does vodafone have free calls to other vodafone numbers? I always forward calls from my employer-supplied Blackberry to my private Nokia N78 as the latter connects to my car via BT SAP.

When the Blackberry was on O2 as the Nokia is, the forwarding was free. Now my employer has switched to vodafone the forwarded calls are quite expensive.

The initialising phone message means the phone is not compatible with the cradle. Looks like an earlier Nokia to me.

As in the phone is too new for the car or vice versa?
