have had a strange engine noise for some time http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=28544

also had trouble with the duovalve - which i thought was fixed until yesterday. Took it apart recently and freed it up.

today real weird problems with the windows and boot.

1. engine noise appears to be erratic - comes and goes. - currently gone - car driving like a dream.

2. Duovalve - couldnt get any heat out of left side vent (bearing in mind default is max heat ) tried bleeding the system but very little extra heat l or r now ??

3. today - tried to open boot from switch on gear selector - nothing (suspect fuse). little while later tried to open drivers window - no go - suspect same fuse !!

little while later driving along and rear ns window opens - on its own   tried to close it - nothin
tried other windows - press switch for rear os window - drivers window opens - even tho i was trying to close rear ??

eventually all windows start opening on their own.

Locked CAr with fob and closed windows with fob.

get in car start driving windows open again - swithes do nowt.

after 3 goes locking and closing with fob windows stay closed :bannana: :bannana:

drive 35 miles home , suddenly window opens again. :( :(

are these linked - is the damn car falling apart on me??

btw just before getting home disconnected supply to duovalves - so should get loads a heat - slightly warm r bit better than l but not hot.

Anyone any good ideas - other than a can of petrol.

Call John Malcovich! http://www.pirellifilm.com/thefilm/home.jhtml Sorry couldnt resist;) and thought it might cheer you up a bit. Checking all the earths and battery supply leads sounds a good place to start.

It sounds like the start of one of those old 70's films where a mother with noisy American kids in the back is driving thru the remote nevada desert in an ageing station wagon, and suddenly, just prior to the occupants being beamed aboard a hovering alien spacecraft.....:)

On a serious note, altho' the w210 was one of the first seriously electrical mercs, I have never heard of such a combination of events. Just hope mine doesn't ever start behaving so badly!!!!

A general rule when dealing with a host of weird electrical problems is to check continuity to all the grounds - especially in a car known for rust. The MB workshop manual should show them. There will be quite a few.

Removal and re-seating ECU's with contact/switch cleaner also can help.

Have you checked the battery voltage & alternator? (process extensively described elsewhere on this forum)

Tim

Try disconnecting battery, leave for a while and plug back on, check alternator output, has the car been jump started lately?

These engines can be a bugger to bleed properly. The best way is to fit an extended header tank to raise the level of stored water, then let the engine tick over until it is fully hot and has purged itself.
You will see air bubles being pushed out but it takes a long time for the thermostat to open.
Keep squeezing the radiator pipes but be careful of the fan and auxillary belt.

thanks all - yesterday morning tried all sorts - checked duovalve again - working for sure squeezed bottom hose ( without bashing knuckles on fan ) still no heat !!! couldnt get windows to go wild - checked every fuse on the car . In desperation decided to do what Glenn sugested and disconeccted battery for a minute . Windows havent played up , last night temp dropped to 12 deg - heat on both sides - and car is running really well - no knocking noise from the engine . :bannana: :bannana:

BL**dy strange vehicles we own arnt they.

btw dieselman - did spot that link you posted - did wonder as the module is directly behind the duovalve if it had got some moisture in it in my desperate attempt to sort out the a/c system. BTW I know in this temp i didnt need heat but while the car was doing crazy things it was also trying to freeze me in the car - had to set aircon to almost max temp just to stop frost bite.

Sounds like the wierd window problem I have at the moment on an E240....1998 model.

Press window button, nothing happens. Press again, goes down by two inches and stops. Press again, goes down again by two inches and so on and so on. Once at the bottom, it then takes about half an hour of button prodding to watch the window go up 2mm's at a time.

Does this on three of the windows...the other rear window has a blown motor.

Have tried the battery disconnect thing to no avail and the battery has loads of juice. Tried re-setting the windows as per the manual, again to no avail.

Car is in with my local Indi today to have both rear window motors replaced as when they disconnected the semi-failed rear motor it made the front windows work correctly.

Anyway its all very wierd and I hope they get to the bottom of it.

On another note this is likely to be a biggish bill as it also needs a replacement air-con compressor and new sunroof cables.

Thankfully I managed to get a 2nd hand compressor from Mercman for £175.....better than paying the £550+vat that Merc wanted for a new one. Also got 2x rear window electric motors for £90 whereas Merc wanted £105+ vat per motor.

Great car apart from that and no rust!!!

No the control ECU is in the main ECU box on the near side of the car. The picture depicts a left hand drive car so everything is reversed.

Try disconnecting the module and reconnecting it again.

Have just read this thread for the first time. Am PMSL, sorry. Hope you get it sorted though.
