The contract on my GL320CDI ends in about 8 weeks and I was minded to just return it to MB finance, thnking that the guaranteed residual value in the PCP contract - £33100, is probably a lot more than the car is actually worth.

However, having done a search of Autotrader, MB Direct, Pistonheads and Mercedes AUC cars the cheapest 2008 08 plate appears to be £36500 with more miles than my GL. I was wondering if it is worth having a go at trying to sell it privately to see if I can recoup a little of my initial deposit. Seems the values of these cars has increased slightly from 12 months ago.

The GL320 CDI spec is:

2008 (08 plate) in Obsidian Black with Black Leather (upgrade)
15000 miles, registered 14/3/08.
Spec is standard (which is generous anyway: COMAND, 19" alloys etc) +
Leather upgrade
Side steps
6CD
Telephone pre wire
Easy pack electric tailgate
Reversing camera
Memory pack
Privacy glass (dealer fit)
Full History (serviced once @ 8200 miles 3 Mar 09)
One years MB new car warranty remaining. List price was £57K.

Not sure if it is worth the hassle of trying to sell to make a few hundred quid, a thousand at most, but what do you guys think?

Hmm - quite a niche car to sell IMHO. For the potential hassle of selling a £30k+ car privately, I think I'd not take the risk.

Don't forget the others you have seen advertised would be asking prices, and not the final amount achieved.

Depends on whether you want to/can afford to keep it should you not be able to sell it for what you want?

Will

I agree with Will.

You own not a very popular MB and you may find it hard to sell unless it was cheap.

I thought that might be the consensus, and you are right Will, trying to sell privately at that sort of money does present a lot of hassle and risk. It will just have to go back to MB finance at the end of the term as I was originally planning.

More importantly Peter, what will you replace it with?

Yes - it *might* be worth more in p/x than the GFV. That's what's supposed to happen anyway, and, as you say, the values of this kind of vehicle has come back quite a lot since this time a year ago.

It is being replaced by a Volvo V70 2.4D R-Design Geartronic, which is being delivered 1 March. We are returning to the Motability scheme for the next car - the prime purpose for which is to transport my disabled son and his wheelchair(s). The electric chair hoist is being transfered from the GL to the V70 in about 5 weeks time.

A year ago the value of this car was through the floor, it has come back a fair bit. The PCPs on the new GL reflect a far more pessismistic future values!

Sell it priveatley....you have done your research

What have you to loose? First off if you have a potential purchaser explain it has finance, they can pay it off for you and you take whats left....

I have done this several times and well worth it....you will probably find a trader will take it giving you maybe £500 or even a couple of grand more than the final value with them settling the finance for you and that has to be worth it.

If you don't sell it hand it back and your out of pocket £25-£50 for adverts.

However be prepared for the idiots offering peanuts, you are in full control as you only have to hand it back anyway.....

Mark

Its a lot of car for someone at 33K...

Thing is your looking at gaining around 3K more selling it yourself (max?)

All depends if you want to? and that's up to you.

Not too many people looking at a large SUV at 30K privately I guess? especially if this weather picks up :)

I might consider just putting up a free ad on Pistonheads and see what sort of response I get. I will only have a two/three week window or so from the Wheelchair hoist being removed (c15 Feb) and handing it back in early March.

In fact, I may ask the Volvo garage if one of their trader contacts is interested.

have you tried webuyanycar?

£29,925. Low offer as expected!

Glass's Guide show it at £28,250 in average condition and £32,000 in excellent condition.

First off I would ask at least two MB dealers what they would give you for it, for cash. Many have been short of secondhand cars lately.

Have you firmly booked the Volvo? If not you could part-ex the GL with a group that do MB cars and others. There are some groups that do a wide range of makes within the group as a whole. That would get you best price.

Have you seen the new E estate yet? More room than the Volvo. Just a thought.

Just recently, the new E class estate is available on the MB website on the kind of PCP deal you chose on the GL.

For example the 350cdi diesel in Avantgarde spec (includes leather, Bi-Xenon, bluetooth etc etc) is available for purchase from Jan 9th to March 31st for a deposit of £4,999 and monthly payments of £499. The APR is excellent at only 7%. I imagine you would get the best price for the GL against another Mercedes -if that suits your needs.

You can have an E class saloon for 24 hours to test drive if this helps: -

Dont know if 7% APR and £500pm is that great given the deposit of £5k. The outgoing 211 deals were a lot better IMHO.

If MB will do the contract hire price plus VAT then that's cheaper overall due to the smaller initial payment.

Yes but the E estate is a complete new model - not an outgoing model. To get 7% APR and a good guaranteed residual in not easy in today's market where many charge 15% to 20% or even more.

Yikes. I've not been following finance deals as I finally settled my finance and am saving cash up as that is how I will purchase. At rates like this I feel I may be doing the right thing, looks like the low APR and high GMFV days are gone.
