What's the view on an SL500

Looking at the specs, I'm surprised by the weight and drag coefficient of the R230 SL, it's neither light nor aerodynamic.

The W210 beats it by some margin on both counts

- Coefficient of drag: 0.34

- Weights: curb weight (kg) 1,871

and the 124 saloon beats them both on both counts.

coefficient of drag 0.31 and weight of 1490 kg (E320)

Fantastic cars !!!!!!!!!!!! 124 coupe even better coefficient of drag.

I often wondered John if I would ever have thought this, but so far no I have never needed more power, the 0-60 is quite OK at 6.1 sec just a tad faster than the best MB diesel

Hmm...just a tad...lol:D ....what about midrange oommphhh

I have no idea what the drag coefficient of my V140 tank was, but I have a feeling I probably don't want to know :D.

LOL..

probably Ok as a spider...no windscreen..

I saw the SL on a different site earlier but think this is more accurate..

I can't find them now, but the R129 has three CD figures. Hood down, hood up, and hardtop fitted ... with the latter being the lowest (not surprisingly). Did you know that an R129 is lower with the hardtop on than with the hood up?

This can only be down to the smooth lines of the hard top, I am surprised that it was measurable

I bought an 03 52 plate SL55 AMG 3 months ago. I'd been looking for an SL for a while and then did an AMG Experience at MB World in an SL55 - what a noise! I thought my old TVR Chimera made a great sound but this is something else. I was also struggling to find any SL with the options I wanted - panoramic glass roof 'pace car' wheels, red leather interior (looks better than you think:rolleyes: ) and then this SL55 showed up with my options on it and very sson the deal was done. I think the kicking oneself scenario would have happened it I'd 'settled' for a non AMG.

Since then I've had two reality checks:
A quote of £575 for a rear muffler (managed to repair the old one instead)
A split rear wheel thanks to a pot-hole which cost £820 to replace (MB quotes £990!)

So in summary - its a fantastic car - I can't imagine ever eclipsing it, but the running costs may be its downfall (Did I mention 17mpg with gentle driving? 8mpg if in a hurry:eek: )
