I had Kermit remapped today. The poor iPhone image shows Kermit resting after a round trip 330 miles. I took advantage of a special April offer from a company known as Remap Science and they did the job for £150 all in. I was not sure about making the decision to have reliable old Kermit remapped but eventually decide that there was not a lot to lose and quite a bit to gain. I understand that turbo diesel engines can benefit more than any other sort of engine so I decided to treat Kermit and me to an updated engine map.

The tuning process took less than an hour and it comprised Kermit's current map being read and then the engineer taking the map away on some portable machine and returning about 3/4 hour later with the new map, which was uploaded and then a short test drive. I could tell that Kermit was a little more eager but not madly more so. I had opted for an increase in power output, toque and a general smoothing of the flat spots with hopefully some possible benefit to the economic running of the engine in a more efficient state.

The M1 was mainly clear and Kermit seemed to lift his nose a little every time I pressed the go pedal. The acceleration appeared to be much better throughout the gear range and the whole plot moved with oodles more urgency when pressing on. My fuel consumption showed up on the trip meter as 65mpg while using cruise control on the outbound journey.

On the return journey... cruising at 70mph, the trip meter displayed 81mpg!!! I don't believe that figure but if true it would be a truly mighty feat. The engineer said that the trip meter would be inaccurate for a little while and also suggested that the full impact of the remap will not be apparent until after the engine has accepted all of the changes which he thought might be a few days. (whatever is meant by that phrase)

As it is... I am now delighted that Kermit feels a lot more lively and active when responding to the loud pedal. He pulls like a train in all gears and the engine seems to be running more smoothly. more anon.
