Wheel bolts

Hi, can anyone tell me the size of the bolts needed
for a space saver wheel, i have a 2002 sl r230 with
19" carlsson amg wheels on the car, does it need
shorter bolts or will the bolts do that are holding the
wheels on?
Many thanks
Terry.

hi terry hows the car treating you!!
if you havent changed the bolts they will be stock which means they will be fine mate

There is usually a different set of bolt supplied with space savers. I have a full sized Mercedes spare which also requires different bolts to the AMG alloys.

You can do some serious damage if you use the wrong bolts.

Hi Martin
Thanks for info.
Car is great, running smooth. Had Kenwood SATNAV installed fitted with steering wheel controls - which proved to be a pain (that is the steering wheel controls not the SATNAV).
Put Carlsson wheels on and just last week had to have a new set of tyres - which was a bit expensive as you can imagine.
Thinking of having a stainless steel exhaust with twin tailpipes - like a SL55 - more expense - but you have to get the car to how you like it though.
Our old SL has still not been sold - dealer has reduced the price by £500 to 7499.
Nice to hear from you. Hope your search for a SL is proving fruitful - and let me know what you end up with.

Hi martin,
The existing wheel bolts were ok.
Terry.

Good stuff mate have decided against an r129 as its not practical for the kids so I'm after another 190e 2.3 16 cosworth which should be fun!

I managed to aquire a spare 16" steel wheel for mine.
Am I right in thinking that I will have to get shorter bolts in order to use this? (Currently have 17" alloys on - fortunately, the tyres are a lower profile so that the height is not affected)

Hi, i have a space saver on mine, wasn't to sure of lenght
of the bolts so i tried the space saver on the back of the
car and tried rotating the wheel to see if there were any
obstructions, you have to take the handbrake off and
select neutral, fortunatly mine was ok.
You could try the same if there is a problem i would
suggest shorter bolts

Just to add, it might be worth you checking with the space saver on the front. I purchased a full sized spare ( black alloy 50 mph limit) similar to the alloy spacesavers for my E55. The AMG bolts were way too short so I bought longer 50mm ones. Fitted fine on the back but when I tried on the front the bolts would not tighten all the way, and I had to get shorter 40mm for the fronts. If I had tried tightening all the way I would have stripped the hub thread. There is a post on the other UK forum this week by a guy who got a £1400 repair bill for not using the bolts in his spare kit!

Worth finding out on your driveway that the hard shoulder in the rain!

Martin

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I will certainly check the front with the space saver to make sure. The reason I checked the space saver was that I read about the guy with the £1400 repair bill.
These things cost enough as it is without that sort of repair bill.

Hi Martin
A few pics of wheels as requested, when the weather improves
I will be getting them poweder coated. Was going to have them
diamond cut, but the car had to be away for 4 days and concerned
about leaving car that length of time. Powder coated can be done
locally overnight. Have since put new tyres on wheels which fit
a lot better.
Please send pics of new car when you get it.
Regards
Terry
