Happy Christmas!!

4 days ago I bought a 2014 Merc CLS350 Shooting Brake. Love it. However, the hand/foot parking brake has failed, will be sorted. But I've noticed when changing down from 5th to 4th, slowly, there's a bit of a thud. Otherwise gearbox is silky smooth. I can't see any paperwork stating when or if, transmission oil has been changed.
Car has done 101000, mint condition, well looked after, but being new to this car, thought I'd check. Kind thanks, Becky

Is it electronic handbrake with hill hold?

If just the hill hold has failed your secondary battery will be goosed this does start stop and hill hold.

Also gearbox oil is overdue as already mentioned.

I have had a notchy gearbox before ZF box on a BMW and the oil change on it turned it silky smooth once again so hopefully that will fix the notchiness

Not electronic, it's that foot pedal brake thing, with hand release. Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

As said transmission service is overdue and do not put off getting the foot operated parking brake fixed , it could be as simple as a lube and adjustment issue..or a disconnect main prop shaft, part of exhaust and drop fuel tank slightly to get at it . (depending on design.)

Ask me how I know !

Get it checked out or it could bite you on the bum come MOT time :thumb:

Was this a private or dealer sale?

If the latter then they should be fixing it at their cost.

Not all Independents can fully flush the gearbox, torque convertor and oil cooler so check exactly what is being offered.

I had my gearbox flushed about 4 years ago and that cost £200 put I am sure prices will have risen.

Where in the country are you based? If Members may be able to recommend someone 👍👍

Bought from a dealer a week ago 🙈 only had 3 days when hand brake failed. They will sort it foc for sure. Also whenever they last serviced it, they put too much oil in it, as I have checked, and re checked after a 300 mile round trip, so they need to sort that. So was going to ask they to do the transmission oil foc, as a good will gesture for the inconvenience caused... But rude, but worth a try. As there is a slight this when it drops from 5th to 4th, when driving slowly. Really love the car!

If they messed up an oil change Don’t let them touch a gearbox oil and filter change  . Try for some money off and get it done by an MB specialist like the two I mentioned

I have an excellent Independent garage, so best take it to them!

Take it to Mercland in Nuneaton, they will probably do the transmission change for half the price of a MB Dealership.
Amazing to hear your selling dealer could overfill the engine oil ??

Definate that. Seems the garage done the bare min (or more in this case) to sell a car. Sercivce or oil top up (overfill).
If they cant even get oil level right then run.
Was it a pure used car dealership or a garage also.

Find yourself a MB indy.
An indy doing all makes may be good but does he have MB experience.

I agree with W1ghty's comment ... Post #9.
Changing the auto-trans fluid on these cars is a specialised job and not all garages have the know-how to do it right.
I can recommend Mercland in Nuneaton.
I've bought my E280cdi from them and have had first-class service from them.

The overfull engine oil could also be diesel getting into the sump via the DPF or via a leaking injector; neither of which are particularly cheap to fix and nor will it be doing the engine any good. Have a smell of the oil on the dipstick if it has one.
