MERCEDES E500 SPORT SALOON 2007 | eBay

MERCEDES BENZ E55 AMG 5.4 V8 KOMPRESSOR **2 OWNERS - FULL MB DEALER HISTORY** | eBay

I like the look of the E500 but I’m thinking it’s probably a bit overpriced for what it is. Plus it’s in the high tax band though it does look very clean.

I also like the E55 but I’m aware that’s been for sale for quite sometime which makes me ask why and again I think it’s overpriced...

In the real world performance wise is there much between them? Which would you choose?

I'd take the 55 all day long for the performance alone. There really is a big difference and the running costs are much the same.
If you buy the E500, you'll spend all your time wondering what the 55 would have been like.
That E55 looks in pretty good order too and the heated and cooled seats are a bonus

If you are interested, here is the datacard for the E55

That E500 is quite highly priced but W211s with the later M273 5.5 engine are super-rare. The only other one for sale at the moment is asking a similar price. It’s a great engine, heaps of power and torque, more than I can generally use! But early examples of the M273 engine were prone to a timing chain issue - there’s a a thread on it somewhere which provides the relevant engine number.

Having praised the M273, aficionados of the M113K engine in the E55K report that the performance is on a whole different level due to the monster torque from the supercharger, and I am sure they are right. The E500 doesn’t have instant unrelenting acceleration from any speed in any gear, which the E55K does have. The E55K also has a very tuneable engine if you want more, whereas the M273 V8 has nowhere much you can go, tuning-wise.

E500 saloons don’t sell that easily (maybe because of the high VED) so you could always wait and let the seller stew a bit before making an offer that you consider more reasonable. It doesn’t appear to have too many extras over the standard spec, where the E55 seems a bit better spec’d, and I’m not sure about the aftermarket audio in the 500, but the history looks good and it seems a clean car in paper.

The E500 will surely depreciate, as older ones are now going for only a few £ks, whereas the E55k might kitbhave too much further to go.

Which would I have? Probably would take a chance on the E55K...

I was very much going to go for the E55 but looking at the MOT history of the car, it appears all is not as great as the car looks unfortunately

It all depends what your requirements are. If live in the countryside and you're regularly hitting the floor with your right foot and doing some serious acceleration, as well as needing the ... gentleman's jewellery element... the AMG is the better choice. 0-60 in 4.5 and 18 mpg - pretty impressive.

You're getting that particular E55 at a discount because you need to spend couple of grand on the braking and steering system (and probably fixing an oil leak), according to the MOT advisories.

And you should allow a couple of thousand for the miscellaneous surprises you'll get on an AMG car that's about to turn a hundred thousand miles.

If you do most of your mileage on motorways and A roads with speed cameras around, a 385 bhp E500, doing 0-62 in 5.3 seconds might be fast enough, with an ability to cruise at 100 all day long (on European motorways in kph, obviously) while averaging something like 27mpg in week to week driving. With only 60k miles on the clock, you should only be seeing the routine servicing costs, not the bigger repair bills as things go past 100k miles.

The E500 is over-priced at £9k from a private seller. A similar (5.5 litre 60k miles), but literally immaculate, car was sold last month by a Midlands dealer for £7,500. However price and value is in the eye of the beholder.

To misquote someone above, it's all in your own eyes. It's what you see when you drive it, or when you walk past to walk to the station....(There are many reasons why these cars typically only do 6,000 miles a year.)

And, of course, some love silver while others say once you've tried black, you'll never go back.

Those E55 MOT advisory points from its current MoT are
  • Nearside Rear Brake hose slightly deteriorated (1.1.12 (b) (ii))
  • Offside Rear Brake hose slightly deteriorated (1.1.12 (b) (ii))
  • Nearside Front Track rod end ball joint has slight play (2.1.3 (b) (i))
  • Offside Front Track rod end slightly misaligned (2.1.3 (e))
  • Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))
  • Offside Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))

I would say the MOT history of that E55K reads like a typical E55K except a few more bits were missed until MOT time.

Not everyone is as savvy at picking up faults with suspension and brakes like some of us more enthusiastic types are.

Certainly none of it worries me.

Which would I pick?

The E55K. Not because I want another one but because I think it is a lot better value for money than the E500.

Mileage wise I do no more than about 100-120 in a week. Its mainly town and A roads driving. I am keen on the E55k but iv messaged the seller of the E500 and asked what he consider closer to £7500 so we will see. Im not too fussed about outright performance but i do like noise. So the E55k is the better otion? Would people not be to concerned about the MOT history?

If you like noise, the E55 is THE only way to go.

The E500 will be too quiet. It's a small S Class.

Exactly.

If you want to see a scary MOT history - look up my old M3 Evolution:

P813LHK

I sold that M3 Evolution in 2001 so none of it was my doing!

Sounds better than the man who spent £250,000 running this over 11 years

See link: 2007 CL600 £11,750. One owner. 172k

That doesn't look too bad to me. A lot of those are standard for the W221/C216 platform like the ball joints going early etc. I've read / heard about a fair few similar examples (including an S500L I test-drove once).

The only one that does concern me is the oil leak. I know most E55Ks have them, and whilst they can be fixed they generally return without too much ill-effects. Not sure on the V12!

The oil leak is probably from the breather chambers on the cambox covers. They all go sooner or later, and don't cost a huge amount to fix.

What ever e55 you get i i bet you will spend at least 20% more on replacement parts

Btw i've spent 6k on mine excluding Petrol not all in repairs though. Not bad for a 9 months motoring lol

That's a quote worth repeating.

And the point that any w211 that has done 100k miles will cost more than a W211 that has done 60k.

(Although they are outrageously well proven and reliable cars, as many taxi drivers will confirm.)
