Slightly concerned by the recent threads on rust in MB, I thought it would be interesting to know what this forum believes is the model that has had the most problem with rust - hopefully it turns out not to be the W202
I think it's to do with the period of manufacture, mid to late '90s, which makes the W202 and W210 the major victims of manufacturing issues leading to rusting panels. My car has had two trips to the dealer for warranty repair of rusty bodywork.
W210 is the worst...trunklid around the lock and handle plus the doors - especially on the top around the windows...this doorrust is mainly to be found on the late 90/early 00 models...
W202 trunklid rust
MB saved money by leaving out the rubber between the trunklid handle and trunklid which caused the trunklid to rust (as the handle moves)...who ever thought of that saving at MB must be fired...ALL US spec 210s and 208s came with this rubber from the beginning in 1994 till the end in 2002...in europe that rubber was only used on the 93 and 94 202s.
Saving on the amount of paint late 90s caused the 210s to rust on the doors...
wings, front (near headlight) footwells, sills (all) , bootlid, bottom of doors, bottom of spare wheel well, rear valance, number plate support (front), rear arch (lower front of), sunroof edges......
The first few 202s had a different handle then the later ones had...rubber won't fit...I used black polyurethane kit to make sure my handle would not cause any rust...
