Which reader

I ve been planning on buying a code reader for some time but before I take the plunge I want to make sure it will work with my car. Any body have any idea which protocol is needed ,OBD OBD2 or is there something else used on Mercs. Also where is the diag socket? (98 320sport btw)

Being a 1998 it most I dont think it will have an OBDII port. It is normally under the dash on the drivers side. The port is under a little flap / door.

You should have a round diagnostic socket in the engine bay. I have seen converters to convert it to the OBDII type plug but not used one myself. 38 PIN to OBD 2 Adaptor Lead for Mercedes C E S Class on eBay (end time 07-May-10 18:37:54 BST)

The one I have been interested in is the Autel MaxiDiag EU702, as it'll do engine, trans, airbag and ABS

Thanks I will check on the port on my car to see which it is. My son has an Alfa 156 so it will probably be used more on that to be honest.
