Hi guys, sorry, dont know if this is in the right section, but I have a loud whining sound inside the car when driving, I dont know if its coming from the front or back, but definatley isnt from the engine because when I dip the clutch and keep rolling its still loud...
Went to a garage today and he said its a wheel bearing at the drivers side front... Just want a second opinion if anyones had this problem... What will it cost approx... (C250 TD Sport) W202

Thanks in advance

The description sounds right for a wheel bearing assuming the noise to correlate to road speed.

A typical test is to listen as taking bends, if the noise gets louder when turning left it's the right side and vice versa.

The cost damage shouldn't be too bad as it's a pretty straightforward job.

Going to get one more guy to look at it today, and then get the work carried out, the noise doesnt seem to change when I turn or the weight of the car shifts...

Leave the kids/wife/gf at home.....

And I thought I was being all mature by not posting a similar comment last night

Nice one.... :bannana:

Just get the wheel bearing done for piece of mind, it won't be an expensive job from a good indy. If it is a wheel bearing though, it should vary in volume and/or pitch when you turn left or right.

Right had someone look at it that I trust and know today, he said its a bearing that connects something to the diff... Sound right?
He put the car on the ramp and drove it, and from the back of the car the noise was LOUD!!! And then there was play in something that connects to th diff, so looks like thats what it is...
Going in on Friday to get the bearings on that done, will let you guys know the outcome...

Thanks

Hi guys, car had just come back and has been diagnosed needing a DIFF and Full shaft... Sounds like a exbenzive one... Any recommendations?

All the parts for the diff are available BUT it can be tricky to set the correct thrust.
Odd that the diff bearings have gone unless either the diff has been low on oil, you've been caning it, it's done huge mileage or the engine has been chipped.

How does a chipped engine affect the longetivity of the diff?
Yes you may put more strain through the box or the engine but surely if you were to drive faster on a standard car it would have the same affect?

I would buy a replacement second hand diff. £100-150 from breakers. As Dieselman says its rare for one to whine.

The cheapest diff and shaft I can come across is £300 then £120 for fitting...

The chipping provides more torque than the diff was designed for so it will definately wear the crown wheel, pinion and bearings faster.

iirc, Tigger actually blew his apart after the upgrade.

Driving faster won't do this as the torque output is within the design range and the diff is just turning faster.

If it was me I'd pull the diff and fit new bearings and check the state of the crown wheel and pinion gear.

3hrs labour max should see this done.

A quick test of the bearings is to lift the driveshaft joints and check for movement of the diff flanges.

If you are fairly competent with spanners you could do this yourself.

Hehehe...

Blew apart is bit of an overstatement but to be fair it became very very noisy (like a dozen coffee grinders going at full pelt) which then had to be replaced and as I wasn't able to source a cheap replacement I had to pay full whack!

Diff oil was checked and was fine both in terms of quality and quantity.

Personally, I think manufacturers have near enough perfected failure by design. For example, I like to refill my mineral water bottle in the car from the water cooler at work. Thesedays the mineral water bottles have the flip caps where the hinges will break after say twenty open and closes.

Shocking..........

As I said, I'd do the bearings.
You should be able to get them either from the dealer or maybe cheaper from a bearing supplier.

But if I do the bearings I will still have the whinning sound...
