Hi all,

There is a whining under the car now.
How can I know if its the propchaft bearing or the differential?

Its the same if I put on neutral while moving, the sound change with the speed same as on gears.

Cheers.

So that's where my mrs has gone! seriously now, sounds like it could be your diff, lack of oil or worn.

Differential note usually changes as drive goes on and off--- usually more prominent on the overrun as the car slows down on a trailing throttle. Obvious thing to check first is the differential fluid level as has been said and also the gearbox fluid level and condition There is no way to effectively check the propshaft centre bearing without removing the propshaft and then you might as well replace it and its mounting----- but check the front and rear flexible couplings are OK.

Whining will be either tyres or differential.

Try changing the differential oil it can stop whining as once the EP chains in the oil break down, the gear teeth start touching, causing the whine.

Cheers
The oil level was checked a week ago and changed a year ago...

Differential then :(

Or tyres. They can make a whining noise as they wear down.

Yes, check tyres first!

I once had two rear wheel bearings replaced on a Vectra because of a significant whine.

Turned out to be worn tyres on the inside edge but with plenty of tread left.

I've had one of the Vans once with what seemed like a lumpy steering rack which was tyres.

The centre prop bearing normally sounds like a feint rubbing like when brakes make a noise if they havent bedded properly..

To rule out tyres just put the fronts on the back.

Most likely diff bearing though.

Cheers.
It is not like a tire sound for what I can gather...
Tires are new too.
