Cleaned the windows this morning only to find a crack on the lower part of my windscreen :(. Have spoken to my insurance and they have said I can have a genuine Mercedes windscreen all I have to do is choose who to fit it out of the 4 that they approve. Could anybody tell me what ones to stay clear of and there experience's please . I understand that its really all up to the people fitting the item but some may be allowed more time than others etc etc:-

The company's I can use are:-

Auto Glass
Auto Windscreen's
National Windscreen's
National Mobile Windscreen's

Thanks

Paul

Not the experience-based input you're looking for, but they all fit windscreens all day everyday...

I'd flip coin a couple of times.

I'd let a main dealer fit it.

I have used one and three in the last five years. Whoever you use, use whatever guise you feel comfortable with to watch them from start to finish. That way, you are to hand if they accidentally:- damage paintwork, cut wires, cut interior A-pillar trim, break the cover for the windscreen sensor. That way, you don't end up discovering the bodge or cover-up a few days down the line and feel really put out because you gave them £10 each 'for a drink'………yes, that is experience.
The really sad thing is that I was caught twice, once by each company, donut that I am.

use Glassman from Pistonheads .. very well regarded

It's more the four companies they have an arrangement with. The word, 'approved' is one of the most misused in the industry. Nobody is approved.

Watch them like a hawk. Our 124 had a new screen before we bought it. Turns out they sealed the A pillar trims to the screen so they are now impossible to remove without needing new trims.

Not an uncommon story unfortunately. There are so many 'new' fitters working for the big firms; most of them have no idea about older cars.

Just be wary if you have sensor's fitted in the screen. Like the city safe system or mercedes version etc.

A few of the Skoda gang have had issues with citysafe after a new screen fitted.

I have since used Old School Windscreens in Chertsey to replace the tailgate and rear side glass seals on the 124. Excellent and vey clued up on old cars. They are accepted by most insurance companies but are not a national outfit. Long way from Essex though

Make sure the replacement windscreen has the same colour tint as the original.

On my previous car it was a long time before I noticed the replacement was not tinted at all. But that was after the fitters having turned up twice with the wrong windscreen.

My recently purchased CLK has an original manufacturers branded windscreen, as does my 19 year old Volvo, which is nice. :)

i was going to leave the car with them when i have it done but now i'm thinking, as the crack is only in the very bottom of the screen then leave it, i may even buy a screen and have it fitted it wasn't that bad in price at all

Just keep your eyes closed whilst driving and you'll never know the crack exists..
