Why can`t we have a gtg like this?!!

Yes, its a shame none of over at MBAO could go this year. I think that once we all realised just what a commitment this GTG was going to be, it did seem like too much hard work. 1500 miles each way, fuel costs, accomodation, "secure" parking, Police donations(bribes), insurance and modifications to cars, ie mudflaps etc.

At least, this was mainly my reason for not going

Been to the Ukraine a few times and the last place in the world that I would take a Merc. Once they see the UK number plates you will getting stopped by the Police every half mile (thats no exaggeration). The roads on the way to driving there would be appalling as well. Police openly demand bribes on the street to foreigners.
The language barrier would be another problem. It is very hard to find anybody who speaks english even in restaurants. Although Kiev is in the Ukraine, Russian is the most popular language spoken there. Can be dangerous for people to go out at night as well, especially black/asian.

However on a good point, the women are amongst the best looking in the world! :bannana:

Thats true. My business has taken me to Odessa and Kiev ( jan-feb 2009 ). I was a bit scared to go but we had to as it was a contract for their National Television. In Kiev only one guy was speaking english in a restaurant. Police ?! They-re mad about foreign cars. We got stopped lots of times for no reason. Never seen so many guns in my whole life :)).
As this was an official business between their national Tv and Sat1( Germany ) , we had it covered by german bodyguards. Was ok ,,,but scary. Kiev is full of Mafia. Odessa is heaven- completely different world. Went there with 5 Mercedes trucks, 2 Vitos(mine), 4 Sprinters, 1 E320 class .
Awsome girls everywhere, cheap vodka( i don't drink) and ...Mercs more than Pepsi .
Our way back was through Romania...another EU strange country( bad roads, cheap food, stupid police, insane/kamikaze drivers) but really cool views in the mountains.

:)

As I'm a photographer I am going back there this year to do a documentary photography project. I have had to arrange a 'fixer' to arrange things so that things go smoothly. Crazy place where you never quite feel safe.

Yes I was in Odessa two years ago. The beach was awesome.

Looks like fun..... we should have somthing like this in the UK (at least id feel safer)

Interestingly, Russians driving there have the same problem! My father in law sometimes goes to Kiev and every time he has to take enough "bribery cash" with him for the frequent police stops!

I've also been to Kiev several times, my cousin is co-owner of a big business out there and I think it's an incredible place.
I've had the car/driver set up as well as thumbing a lift with my mate, 4 sheets to the wind at 2am, to the 'River Palace' (those of you that have been there will know

). I've never felt unsafe there, it's very much down to your confidence level and your ability to keep your eyes open in all situations, no different to any big city abroad though.
I've always seemed to get by without any Ukrainian or Russian, although having someone who speaks the lingo does make it much easier.
The girlies are easily the best looking in the world and Ive been to most places, they're also the 'friendliest' if you like to dance and have a good laugh with them.
The bribe situation is absolutely real and a pain, although I've never got into that situation, as I'm always in the right company, with people who are plugged in.
They still have quite a relaxed attitude to lots of things out there and I'm sure their GTG will be quite spectacular in many ways
