why is the instrument panel back light (computer section) staying on and draining the battery only way to stop is to pop the fuse out but then i lose the whole dash no speedo rev counter fuel level etc its in an 98 e430 estate

The CAN is staying live. Are you sure it doesn't shut down after 5 minutes?

no it does not go out just stays on until battery goes flat (too flat to start anyway )in about 10-11hrs
all the pixels go out but the back light just stays on

First blip of the key locks the door but dash will stay live, It should go out and set the alarms eventually.
Second blip of the key should dump the dash lights and set the alarms immediately.

Try locking the car twice, wait a moment between blips. Try both at door lock (IR) and roof aerial (RF).
(Did this work?)

The back lights are only 1.2-1.5 watts each, far less than parking lamps, these alone cannot drain the battery, something else is doing that.

it has no roof ariel (estate) but had no effect anyway also the climate control flickers every now and then could this be an earth fault? this problem is going to start to get ennoying come winter. what else is on this circuit that may be causing this fault?

Hi,
You don,t mention on whether your car has Command but I seem to remember reading a thread somewhere that a faulty Command unit can cause the CAN from Not going to sleep and draining the battery, even if your car has,nt got Command your fault maybe related to a fault in the head unit, might be worth disconnecting your stereo and see if it resolves your issue.

What year is your S210 ?
- the '98 S210 (i.e. the estate) has a rubber duck on the roof for the telephone and key RF, but the AM/FM radio aerial is two strips across the NSR window.

Each door lock has an IR receptor, as does the ignition switch and elsewhere within the cabin (are these linked to the passenger bag sensors, on the B posts?). The lock sensors have long-range and short-range functions e.g. short-range: holding down the key open button from 2-in away from a door lock should drop all the windows.

You should get two winking red lights when the alarms are activated. On the radio for immobiliser and on the centre console alarum switch for the movement/tow-away pest.

no command in car and also no roof ariel, disconnecting stereo has no effect as does pressing the remote multiple times pointed at doors or windows
