Cutting a long story short the lovely people at Belkin replaced my router (which gave up the ghost) with an updated model. Ok I now can access the internet from my laptop. Couple of things here I would realy appreciate help on. I cannot network the two of them together. I have run the Microcr@p wizzard and now see my laptop on my main computer. When I try to access the said laptop it asks for a password. I have tried every password that I have ever used to no avail. I have done something wrong, I just know, but I dont know what. Can any of our IT Guru's help?

Not really a lot of help, but I tried a Belkin router several months ago, absolutly nothing kept asking me for the user ID. Changed to Netgear, no problem since, two PC's one broadband connection.

Hi,
Need a bit more info, ie which os's are you using on both machines and do you have Administrator password for a machine which you are trying to share ...

This sounds permission related. I assume both are NTFS security (XP & or W2k)

Double check by pinging your laptop from your PC. If it pings then follow the below instructions.

Are both PC's in the same workgroup or is one on a Domain and another in a workgroup?

What I do in these cases is map a network drive in Windows Explorer to the share so it is always visible (you did create a share and assign permissions didnt you?)

So, in Explorer, go Tools, Map Network Drive. Give it a letter and point to the correct path of the share. Select reconnect at logon and then Connect using a Different Username.

Now for the critical bit... you want to use the username of the PC you are trying to connect to, preceeded by the machine name. So if the PC is called laptop and the user is called Ian then the username should read laptop\Ian . (if laptop is a domain member it should be domain name\ian ) The password should be the password you use for that user account on the laptop.

Click OK and you should find from this point forward, you are in business.

In win2k (which is what I use) you will need to use the Administrator user name / password to remotely access. eg to connect from PC1 to PC2 it will ask the remote pc's username/password combination:
Connecting FROM PC1:
Username: AdministratorPC2
Password: admin_passwordPC2
-------------------------------
IF you can see the laptop, it means there is a form of connection. You can try the ping command from windows:

on PC2
Start> RUN> cmd <enter>
ipconfig <enter>
(here read the IP address of this computer)

now on the other computer
on PC1
Start> RUN> cmd <enter>
ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address you read from above)

If this works and doens't time out, it means that its just your password that is incorrect. If it "times out" there is a problem with the connection we can analyse further.
Hope this helps,
Spinal

thanks for the reply's guys. It looks like I have a conflict of IP addresses as it keeps timing out. Re loading software to see if I can rectify the problem.

You should also watch out for local firewalls. I felt like a complete idiot after failing to access/ping etc a new machine on the network and it wasn't until I checked the firewall logs on the pc that I saw "ping flood attacks" from local IP addresses that it dawned on me ;) .

Gulp...............Thanks Nick, never thought of that

Have a look in Network connections - if you see any icons with the word 'bridge' in them - delete and reboot. Then report back here at the double! ;)

Many thanks to everyone who has assisted in my dilema. Got it sorted and now can read the news in the comfort of my sitting room (where its warm). I had to uninstall my anti virus / firewall etc then start networking.

Ok now on to another point. Using Firefox and everything is ok (ish) when I click onto a link like, lets say Ebay, I can get all the script but no pictures. What buttons do I have to twiddle to get them back (this hasnt happened as a result of networking). Attached images here too are not showing up. Got to be something simple eh? even my siggy pic is missing.

Whoa hang on you should really still be using some kind of firewall! You should configure the firewall to allow traffic from the other computer, or like my set up where the whole LAN is allowed access EXCEPT for the DSL router which has the usual rules in place.

sorry forgot to mention i reinstalled antivirus and firewall after networking.

Hehe, good :)

What's the mean-time between network attacks these days, 30 seconds or something? :)

EDIT: 20 mins apparently!
