Windows 7

Half of the hospitals in my area are on XP ..strange but true.

I understand public bodies are paying Microsoft for updates to XP to keep it going.

Not sure which ones that applies to though.

Yes I was thinking of 4gb of RAM. This being the case, would I be better going for 64 bit Windows 7? I really only use the PC for surfing the net and email though I have many photos and documents stored .

In this case stick to 32 bit - again, as long as you have no intentions of further upgrading the memory on this PC beyond 4gb RAM.

Also, you machine might not support more than 4GB RAM - so you'd need to check if you did want to upgrade to 8GB.

If you're only using it for surfing the web and sending emails why bother with upgrading old hardware?

Buy a chromebook or a second hand PC with Windows 7, you'll be at more benefit in the long run

Photos and documents can be stored on a £10 storage device from any decent site like ebuyer via USB

If the route chosen is Windows 7 - you've also only got just over 4 years until you are in the same boat with support for it as you are with XP now (Windows XP got 3 added years because Vista was a crock).

I'd consider investing in a new Windows 10 PC...

Although I intend to run it until Windows 10 is no longer supported, if it lasts that long, I am not upgrading my memory in my machine because it is 8 years old now.

I will replace failed hardware if cheap enough or I already have spares!
