For the past 2 weeks I have shut down my PC in the normal way but it never now turns off and have come back to it 24hours and the PC is running but moving the mouse does nowt and the screen wont turn on (its a desk top PC)

Its not the updates (when you shut down sometimes it takes a while to install updates) but this is annoying as I have to turn it off on the button and it should do so itself.

Advice? Anyone experiencing the same?

If the installation is older than 2 years consider blitzing it and starting again - Windows has these senior moments as it ages.

If the hardware supports it, move to Win7.

Otherwise, try reinstalling your ACPI drivers (hunt in device manager) although be aware this has killed a PC of mine in the past, so backups are your friend :thumb:

I had similar inthe past.

try starting in safe mode, then shutting down then a start again. if it stil does it a vigorious virus scan might be needed.

Was thinking of canning this PC and buying R2D2's one in the classifieds. This was is 6yr old but high high spec for its day. Got all the good stuff backed up on an external HD.

Last formatted the HDs and installed windows about 18months ago. Cannae face it again unless I have too.

Will do the virus scan again. Could be as I updated to AVG9 free about 2 weeks ago then this started.

Try booting into 'safe mode' and then shutting down. See what happens.

Also, could it booting again from the BIOS settings? 'Wake on Lan etc...

From this thread there are a few 1524's...

What is the best course of action.

Downloaded and ran markmifsud's application.

Worth a shot I guess.

i eventually gave up and reinstalled Windows XP. Not only did it solve the problem but the whole laptop performed much faster afterwards. Well worth the effort. Just don't forget to backup your data and save things like IE favourites.

I've rebooted it and it works ok now but will re-instal the OS ASAP and start again, I am backing up stuff as I type this.

Ta everyone.
