My windscreen is smearing something wicked when I use the screenwash and in the rain. I am fitting a new wiper blade on Sat, but want to give it a good clean before hand. Any advice on how to get it squeaky clean so its clear when used in anger? :D

What I do is wash the window clean with car wash shampoo. Then with a razor blade with water, carefully go over the screen to make it smooth. Wash off again and finish off with a quality window cleaner. I use Meguairs.

The best thing to clean your screen with is the autoglym glass polish. It is a thick gloopy polish and smells the same as some ancient windolene polish I found at my grandmother's house. It really makes a good job of any kind of glass or mirror also great to use in the house! :D

You may also wish to buy some of the overpriced stealership screenwash. I don't know what they put in it but it always wash/wipes better with that stuff.

I've heard, a little white vinegar mixed with a little water does a great job. Be careful with it around rubber since it may be detrimental to rubber.

Asif.

Wipe the blades with vinegar that should it smearing. ;)

Exactly what I was going to suggest. A little white vingear in your final rinsing water will give you utterly gleaming windows - then dry off using scruynched up newspaper - yes honestly. The polish with a lint free cloth.

Do dust no faff but stunningly clean windows:rock:

...and all this time I thought Pammy's recommended window cleaner was called Nigel. :D :D

Cut a potatoe in half, wash the screen with water and vinegar, dry with newspaper then go over the windscreen with the potatoe, wash again with water and vinegar and dry with the newspaper again. Magic results.

Get yourself down to your dealer and get a bottle of this:

A005 989 1971 glass G/P cleaner. It costs about £10.00 for a litre and its pure isopranonol (spelling!) alcohol. Its for glass - paintwork - trim etc. I have some and its the best glass cleaner I've ever come accross

Very very good but dont get hooked on the vapours  .

I never said I did the cleaning - just how to do it - typical foreman(woman) :D :D

I dont mind cleaning Pammy's windows but she might find my travelling costs too much :bannana:

Joking apart Halfords do their own brand od extreme window cleaner to remove Rainex etc.
Works well.

Can also get it from Maplin Electronics at £9.99 for 1 litre.

Many monitor/tv screen cleaning pads contain isopropanol and that is handy to keep in car. Can use Methylated Spirit (which is Methanol and so vapours are nasty) but isopropanol seems to work better.

Very often all you are trying to do is shift wax/oil film off the screen and a suitable solvent does the job. Always had a problem understanding how car shampoo products that "wash & wax" do not end up waxing your windscreen at the same time!

My car suffered terribly with smearing for a while, even after replacing the wiper blade.
I can't remember what actually stopped it but have noticed that since I stopped using any kind of car wash detergent when washing the car I no longer have a smeary screen. I now add car wax to the water and use that instead.

I have some professional glass polish which really works well at cleaning but haven't used it for some time. I would echo the newspaper and vinegar ideas.

Once the screen is clear give it a coat of wax but be very sparing applying with a damp aplicator and buff it of very well. Do this right and you hardly need the wiper anyway as the water flies off.

I suspect the smearing is the wiper blade depositing rubber/silicone onto the screen which then subsequently stops the wiper clearing properly.

I recommend autoglym glass polish too, gives excellent results:p

My mate who used to do mega miles used to use a aerosol called MIXRA which is no longer available. It has reappeared as Holts Screenies( mixra formulation). Should be widely available? there is also a bug remover review here, http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/producttests/200512/bug_cleaners.html
