Wipers (again sorry!)

Hello,

I posted an earlier post regarding the wipers on my W114 coupe, I have now recieved the new wipers rubber and I have cut them to size and pop them on the blade, however the wiper is not functioning properly, it is stuck on the windscreen.

I have tested the wiper motors by lifting the blade up and they swing very smoothly. I am wondering could it be that the wipers are not set up properly? I fiddled around with it, but its still not working properly.

I am wondering would modern wipers fit the car? what options do I have?

I would really appreciate your help.

The first thing to check is the fuse, if that is o.k, try listening from outside the car, is there any sound coming from the motor, try all speed settings?

The blades themselves wouldn’t be an issue, the fault could be in the way the wiper arms are connected with the linkage OR part of the linkage has failed Or the linkage where it connects to the motor has failed.

If you look at this link, you will see how wipers works, yours may be different but you will have all the components that make up the system similar to the animation. Given the age of the car it is possible that some part of the linkage was on its last legs and your handling of the wiper arms has caused that part to finally fail.

A detailed description of what is happening would help, and were the blades parking correctly before this fault happened.

Try lubricating the wiper drive mechanism as the problem is that the friction of the blades and mechanism is enough to overcome the power of the motor.

If lubing doesn't work it's probably going to need a new motor.

Thanks Dec and Dieselman,

They seem fine when I lift them up and they are happily "wagging" away.

I will definitely try lubricating it. The reason I think it might be the wiper rubber is because my old ones have a hard back and the new ones are all soft and this might be sticking to the windscreen too well?

Just another quick question for future reference, would any wiper blades fit? Mine measure at 16 inch, would any 16 inch fit? I just though new technology might excel the old ones and also much much less hassle.

Thanks,
Angus

The type of blade fitted is not going to be that critical to the working of the blades on the screen, it’s just a strip of rubber being pushed across the glass, if the windscreen is wet and even if the wrong blade is fitted there should still be enough power in the motor to move the blades on the glass, so the fault may be as Dieselman suggests either the linkage or the motor.

Sounds like the splines are buggered to me, alright with no drag, slipping with wiper blade on window.....

Thanks Dec and Mangoman,

Don't think with my technical knowledge I will be able to fix this, so will ask garage to look at it when doing a service. Thanks for your help.

I have a similar problem with my W202 C43. My problem is they won't park. But it works fine off the car!

The wiper motor spindle has end float. Pushed in its making contact with the park switch. Pulled out it doesn't so it doesn't park. Going over a bump will push it down to its worn mode.

Motor was replaced in May with a pattern part one from GSF so its going back under warranty. If it was out of warranty I would take off the cover of the motor and carefully bend the contacts inside so it makes contact.
