We have a Netgear Wireless Router model no DG834PN and I need a wireless adapter to receive a signal. My room is located some distance from the router and the signal has to go through a number of walls. Cabling is a non starter, plus I do not like the idea of a booster.

What PCI\PCI-E adapters would folks recommend please? Would a PCI adapter be better than USB?

I am at present using a WPN111 and am having no end of issues with it. (Lock-ups and blue screen)

Thanks for any advice,
John

Personally I would go for USB for no better reason than you can fit an extension cable to your USB port and put the antenna in a better reception area than the back of your PC (Which manufacturers seem to believe will be where the signal is strongest!)

As for which one, you have a Pre-N system which is compatible with .11g, depends how fast you want your connection to be. You can probably get a good price on an .11g from Belkin, Linksys or Netgear. All should be good.

I hesitate to say try to get the WPN111 set up fixed (if when it does work you get a good signal) as this and the router were actually designed as a pair.

Thanks very much for the constructive advice. With our WPN111 adaptor, it appears to be a common problem. My son had it on his computer, then he decided there might be a problem with his set-up, so it got dumped on me. After a couple of weeks it started misbehaving so he carried out some research on the Internet and discovered numerous folks were suffering the exact same problem.

Having read your post would you agree with us considering a Netgear WPN311? We have a spare antenna that will fit it (hopefully)

Thanks again,
John

does it have to be wireless?

a cabled network is always the best option , wireless is a distant second.

Should work well. Be aware you may need to update the firmware in the router.

Never one to throw anything out have you tried a bare installation of the WPN111 (just it's driver and *.inf files) and letting Windows manage it rather than the Netgear software?

Unfortunately it does have to be wireless as the cabling would be a nightmare.

Good tip, and we've tried that idea :o

Ever considered one of these? I have used them for a while for those difficult locations, as long as your power is not on 3 phase, you will be fine. :)

I found this site which had a number of them, however I would shop around.

Paul.
Hi Paul
:o :) :) Now you tell me ;)

I had heard of these gadgets, but the only reports I read were not favourable :o

I take it you are very happy with the ones you have bought? Could you possibly pm me the details please of the specific model you bought and distances involved?

Thanks very much,
John
